How has «
school breakfast» changed since you first started
in school nutrition?
It was wonderful to hear feedback from
school nutrition professionals on what challenges they have faced and conquered to bring
breakfast -
in - the - classroom to their
schools and districts.
Teachers, students, parents,
school nutrition professionals, custodians, and administrators saw the value
in the program, which delivered on its promise to increase participation at
breakfast.

The findings of the research summarized
in The Wellness Impact echo what child
nutrition advocates have been preaching about
school breakfast (and comprehensive
school wellness approaches) for years.
Fortunately, we have some answers to this problem
in the form of existing federal child -
nutrition programs —

Just one day before the scheduled markup of the House Education and the Workforce Committee «s «Improving Child
Nutrition and Education Act of 2016» (an Orwellian name if there ever was one, given how the bill would gut child
nutrition), Congressman Todd Rokita (
IN - R), chair of the subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary and Secondary Education, introduced a substitute amendment which, among other things, proposes a three - state block grant pilot for
school breakfasts and lunches.
When I first started researching issues related to
school food and
nutrition, I was pretty shocked to learn about the stigma surrounding
school lunches and
breakfasts, and to hear about the way that the federal program is implemented
in most areas.
The Partners for
Breakfast in the Classroom are a consortium of national education and
nutrition organizations, including the Food & Research Action Center (FRAC), the National Association of Elementary
School Principals (NAESP) Foundation, the NEA Foundation, and the
School Nutrition Foundation (SNF).
