He and 11 other scientists invested considerable time and effort — including 85 new
radiocarbon -
dated samples — to
obtain the most accurate time line possible.
A team, led by Professor Thomas Higham of the University of Oxford,
obtained new
radiocarbon dates for around 200 samples of bone, charcoal and shell from 40 key European archaeological sites.
That expedition, 10 years ago, was to
obtain paint samples that might be
radiocarbon -
dated.
Combining RPO and
radiocarbon dating, scientists can link the most - heat - reactive organic matter to the youngest carbon
dates, thereby
obtaining more accurate sediment ages, which correspond to the ages of surface water plankton in the sediments.
Continuous series of tree - ring
dated wood samples have been
obtained for roughly the past 10,000 years which give the approximate correct
radiocarbon age, demonstrating the general validity of the conventional
radiocarbon dating technique.Several long tree - ring chronologies have been constructed specifically for use in calibrating the
radiocarbon time scale. Some may have mistaken this to mean that the sample had been
dated to 20,000
radiocarbon years. The second characteristic of the measurement of
radiocarbon is that it is easy to contaminate a sample which contains very little
radiocarbon with enough
radiocarbon from the research environment to give it an apparent
radiocarbon age which is much less than its actual
radiocarbon age.
Although the estimates
obtained by
radiocarbon dating may more accurately represent the arrival
date rather than a divergence
date estimate provided by the mitogenomic data, the
radiocarbon dates and divergence estimates are very similar.
Shell ages were
obtained from NOSAMS (www.nosams.whoi.edu) via
radiocarbon dating by sampling each shell individually in the last complete annual growth band recorded by the animal.
