Microbiomes should be part of every study in which scientists are studying the performance of animals, plants, people,
oceans or other ecosystems, because microbes have a major

influences on the jet stream's behavior, and some scientists think that changes in tropical
ocean temperatures, or the cyclical recurrence of El Niño, might have a bigger effect
on the jet stream than changes in the Arctic.
Together with shipboard and satellite data, the global network of measuring sites provides further understanding of the
ocean - atmosphere system and its
influence on global climate and biological productivity.
These systems play a major role in transporting heat and carbon, and are therefore indispensable to understanding the
ocean's
influence on climate.
We find that this standard ansatz provides a reasonable lower bound
on the outer boundary of the habitable zone, but the
influence of obliquity and
ocean fraction can be profound in the context of planets
on eccentric orbits.

The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), and El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO) have all been found to significantly
influence changes in surface air temperature and rainfall (climate)
on decadal and multi-decadal scales, and these natural
ocean oscillations have been robustly connected to changes in solar activity.
Many of these microbes fundamentally
influence the
ocean's ability to sustain life
on Earth.
Surface
ocean temperatures along the West Coast have a strong
influence on nearby land weather, affecting air temperatures, and they are closely linked with daily fog coverage.
