As
ocean water temperatures dropped below 50 degrees during the previous weeks, thousands of sea turtles became stranded in the Southeast.
The organizations came to the rescue of the stranded sea turtles, a threatened species, off the coast of North Carolina in February when
ocean water temperatures dropped below 50 degrees.

The plan is to
drop sensors into the surrounding
ocean to measure
water temperatures, then skim the ice for signs of changes in surface height.
And then, if the
ocean surface
water was «diluted» with isotopic light melt
water, would this not be reflected with a similar
drop in the Greenland ice cores, just by a changing isotope signature of the source, instead of a
temperature drop?
After 5 or 6 is always my favorite time to be near the
water, there's something so calming about being by the
ocean after the crowds have subsided plus the
temperature probably
dropped a good ten degrees by that time!
Eventually, cross the Antarctic Convergence where you can notice a distinct
drop in
temperature as the ship enters the
waters of the Antarctic
Ocean.

A lot of reseach energy is being devoted to the study of Methane Clathrates — a huge source of greenhouse gases which could be released from the
ocean if the thermocline (the buoyant stable layer of warm
water which overlies the near - freezing deep
ocean)
dropped in depth considerably (due to GHG warming), or especially if the deep
ocean waters were warmed by very, very extreme changes from the current climate, such that deep
water temperatures no longer hovered within 4C of freezing, but warmed to something like 18C.
And then, if the
ocean surface

Using an
ocean circulation model for the shelf, the authors find that surface
temperatures may increase by 0.5 to 2.0 °C, seasonal surface salinity may
drop by up to 2 PSS in some areas, and that Haida Eddies will strengthen, as will the Vancouver Island Coastal Current and freshwater discharges into coastal
waters.
As the
temperature continues to
drop, the
water on the surface may get cold enough to freeze and the lake /
ocean begins to ice over.
Even if the
temperature e.g. at the poles, the sink places,
dropped 1 °C more than average, that doesn't make much difference: the current CO2 level at about 400 ppmv gives about the same partial pressure of 400 microatm everywhere over the
oceans (minus a few % due to
water vapour).
In October 2017, mission scientists and crew
dropped 240
ocean probes from a C - 130 aircraft into the
waters around Greenland to measure
ocean temperature.
These days,
ocean temperature is measured three ways, two of which — XBTs and CTDS — require
dropping equipment into the
water from ships, so they obviously only provide data where there is currently a boat that has the goods.
I can only list a few regular «goings on'that I KNOW affect sea level; I'm certain that there are others: Change in overall
temperature of the
oceans (a few millidegrees / mm), plate tectonics, slit from rivers, erosion of seashores, extraction of ground
water which ultimately returns to the
oceans, marine life and its products building up the
ocean floors, melting land ice, undersea discharges of a variety of «stuff» from literally hundreds of thousands of sources, often at
temperatures in the 1 - 2 thousand degree range, which we are only now beginning to notice, wind carrying dust from the land and
dropping it on the
ocean.
