A new study finds that allowing students to take a college - level statistics
class instead
of remedial
algebra has long - term benefits, starting with higher student pass rates.
The results were promising enough that Negash now is using Khan in all
of her 9th - grade
algebra classes.

of a math
class after
Algebra II.
Both papers examine the effect
of an online
algebra class, but to very different populations.
Along with the new standards was a graduation requirement for students, starting with the
Class of 2017, to pass subject - specific state tests in
Algebra I, biology and literature called Keystone Exams to earn a diploma.
This might include early intervention for students who are at risk
of failing
Algebra I or any 9th - grade math
class, credit recovery or targeting students with attention from graduation coaches in high school.
Under that policy, students scoring below the national median on the 8th - grade math exam were required to take two periods
of algebra a day during 9th grade instead
of one, with the second
class providing support and extra practice.
Overall, 55 percent
of CPS students scored below the 50th percentile and thus should have been assigned to double - dose
algebra, but only 42 percent were actually assigned to the support
class.
When Elaine Nielson was in sixth grade, her teacher noticed that she and a few
of the other students in her
class were up for a challenge and decided to start teaching them
Algebra.
A significantly higher percentage
of students in the traditionally structured
algebra credit - recovery
classes earned a grade
of C or higher (44 percent) than in the online
classes (about 30 percent).
Assignment to double - dose decreased the average achievement
of a student's classmates by more than 19 percentile points, and increased the size
of regular
algebra classes by 2.4 students.
Yet, the NJDoE, ignoring the research and the common core warnings, believe that an indicator
of common readiness is how many students a school can push into an
Algebra I
class in grade 8.
Right now, ninth - grade students, the
Class of 2017, are mandated to take the Common Core
Algebra Regents.
Unfortunately, a growing body
of research is showing that when you march a teenager through the same
algebra class again, it doesn't help much.
