of Black Male Student Achievement, which has already showed promise in improving the academic achievement of its students (Wisely, 2016).

The overall effect
of race matching on discipline outcomes is largest for

Sixteen percent
of black male elementary school
students in the classrooms
of white female teachers received exclusionary discipline in North Carolina during our study period.
The graduation rate for
male Black students in the Rochester City Schools for 2015 was 44 percent,
of whom just 3 percent had Regents diplomas, as compared to the 8 percent statewide average for the group.
At grade eight, 12 (again, three percent)
of 435
male Black students tested were proficient (levels 3 and 4) in reading.
We know then that those two
male Black students,
of an eighth - grade class
of 690, eventually received degrees from the University
of Rochester.
We began The Fellowship to not only support current and aspiring
Black male educators, but to advocate for critically conscious
Black men to step into the classroom and for all
students to have a diverse group
of teachers that included
Black men.
These results can be compared to those for New York City, where 24 percent
of male Black students and 25 percent
of male Hispanic
students scored proficient in grade 8 reading, or they can be compared to the statewide averages: 21 percent
of male Black students and 24 percent

students reading at the proficient level in eighth grade.

One could speculate that if Rochester's
male Black students moved to New York City (preferably to eastern Queens, but whatever) eight times as many would learn to read at grade level, as would four times as many

Black male educator that peddles the very white supremacist teachings and biases against
Blacks that historically undergirds many schools is
of no benefit to any
of our
students.
AACTE also hosted a webinar spotlighting the work
of the
Black and Hispanic / Latino
Male Teachers Initiative Networked Improvement Community (see this article and this archived webinar) and shared an invitation to this fall's dissertation retreat for Holmes Scholars and other interested
students.
A recurring theme was the laser - like focus not on the deficits
of Black and Latino
male students, but on the responsibilities
of the adults to disrupt legacies
of oppression in a systemic way.
Losen says more than one out
of every three
black male disabled
students were suspended once in 2011 - 2012, which is more than twice the rate
of white
males with disabilities.

students has led to a shift in belief systems and improved GPAs and progress to graduation.
The study also found that a severe lack
of black and Asian
male teachers at LAUSD means «that
black and Asian boys were particularly affected by disparities in characteristics between teachers and
students.»

The current discipline model in our school systems is not working towards this goal
of educating our
black male students.
North Carolina researchers analyzing another large data set found similar results in 2007.27 More recently, in a study published by the Institute
of Labor Economics, researchers and university economists found that low - income
black male students in North Carolina who have just one
black teacher in third, fourth, or fifth grade are less likely to drop out
of high school and more likely to consider attending college.
His recent work analyzes the social, educational and cultural experiences
of Black male K — 12 teachers who have been effective in addressing the academic and social needs
of Black male youth, and how the practices and pedagogy translate to all teachers meeting the needs
of vulnerable populations
of students.
I realize now that part
of the reason that I never felt pressed to attend, was because I had been privileged to work in school communities (mostly) that believed in me as a
Black male educator, that were full
of Black men choosing to show up excellent for the
students that we served, and that supported my growth.
Educators need to become agents
of change in regards to our discipline and approach to
black students and especially to
black male students.
With 31,320
black male students, that's a ratio
of 42 to 1, compared with the ratio
of white
male students to white
male teachers
of 9 to 1.
There has been limited research conducted on disproportionate discipline effects on
black male performance on standardized exams but UCLA professor Dan Losen suggests reducing suspensions improves
student engagement which produces the safety
of the learning environment.
If we are truly committed to educating our
black male students then our discipline model must change or we face losing another generation
of under - educated
black male students who will not contribute to society in a positive manner.
I have started a partnership with North Carolina Central University Royal Court as well as some
of the Greek Fraternities to become mentors for
black male students.
But I am intentionally — and unapologetically — focusing on
black male teachers because
black male students continue to be one
of the most underserved populations in schools.
