Thomas told me his biggest artistic influence is his mother, Deborah Willis, an artist and art historian who is the author of such books as Reflections in Black: A History
of Black Photographers 1840 to the Present and the chair of the photography department at New York University, Thomas's alma mater.

This exhibition is the second of four rotations that explore each of the four volumes
of The Black Photographers Annual, which ended in 1980.
In the second volume
of The Black Photographers Annual, editor and publisher Joe Crawford included an interview with P. H. Polk (1898 — 1984), the official photographer at Tuskegee University for nearly 50 years.
However, the group's critique of institutional racism in and beyond Britain's art world [6] became a part of the impetus that led to The Other Story, a seminal survey of African and Asian artists at London's Hayward Gallery in 1989 as well as the founding of the Association
of Black Photographers and the establishment of Iniva, the Institute of International Visual Arts — some of which have exhibited Piper's work.
He was founding director of the Kamoinge Workshop, formed in 1963 to address the underrepresentation
of black photographers in the art world, and mentored a generation of aspiring African - American artists.

In 1973, a group of African American photographers in New York City published the first volume
of The Black Photographers Annual.
Based on «Reflections in Black: A History
of Black Photographers, 1840 to the Present,» a 2000 book by Deborah Willis, who co-produced the film, the documentary features Lyle Ashton Harris, Glenn Ligon, Lorna Simpson, Hank Willis Thomas, and Carrie Mae Weems, among many others.
The exhibition includes photos by Ming Smith, who was an early member of the Kamoinge workshop, a group
of black photographers who collaborated and supported one another in their creative endeavors.
One of the other essays by Carla Williams discusses the Black Photographers Annual, a short - lived journal and anthology
of black photographers» portfolios, first published in 1973.

of a couple
of art icons from the Seventies, curator Sam Wagstaff and homoerotic
photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
After that disquieting prologue, Get Out switches focus to
photographer Chris (Daniel Kaluuya, from Sicario and the terrific exercise - bike episode
of Black Mirror) as he prepares to accompany his girlfriend on a weekend trip to her hometown.
It's not the most plot - heavy
of films, dancing from skit - like episode to episode, a structure reminiscent
of the aforementioned «Frances Ha,» a parallel further underlined by the
black - and - white photography (if anything the 35 mm work here, by
photographer Sara Mishara, is even better than in Noah Baumbach «s film).
