silence and giving us the first sliver
of official information about the game in what feels like ages — and oh boy, was it worth the wait.
That can take the shape
of home invasion (Funny Games), or slowly going nuts (The Shining), or zombification (Night
of the Living
Dead), or being literally consumed by someone else (The
Silence of the Lambs).
Saw co-creators James Wan (The Conjuring) and Leigh Whannell (Insidious) return to collaborate on another horror tale with
Dead Silence, a visually intriguing but thinly developed scare flick that will likely only be
of appeal to genre fans just looking for a few creepy jolts.
The creators
of the Saw series, director James Wan (The Conjuring,
Dead Silence) and screenwriter Leigh Whannell (Saw II, Saw III), team up with Paranormal Activity's creator, Oren Peli, for a good - looking but pedestrian attempt at yet another haunted house / demon possession flick.
Outside
of a few stylish visual touches by director Wan, some solid cinematography by John R. Leonetti (The Perfect Man, Honey), and an apt score from Charlie Clouser (Death Sentence, Resident Evil: Extinction),
Dead Silence doesn't have much to offer to viewers who aren't weirded out by such things as sinister looking dolls and «jack - in - the - box» moments in which characters must slowly reach out to reveal what's hidden under blankets in order to see what scary thing lies underneath.
With spotty acting, superficial developments, and rules that seem to be made up as the film moves along,
Dead Silence is strictly only
of interest to audiences who are all about scary images set to ominous music, caring far less about a good storyline to follow or characters who do or say things that might be plausible to anyone who experiences them in real life.

The directing talent involved with this film is fantastic with directors like Adam Wingard (You're Next, A Horrible Way to Die, Pop Skull), Simon Barrett (You're Next,
Dead Birds, Read Sands), Ti West (The House
of the Devil, The Roost, The Innkeepers), David Bruckner (The Signal), Joe Swanberg (Silver Bullets), Glenn McQuaid (I Sell the
Dead), along with Radio
Silence.
After the success
of Saw, Wan opted not to direct the sequel (or any
of them, for that matter) and instead turned his attention to
Dead Silence in 2007, also co-written by Whannell.
Anyone who saw Alps, a vicious, uncanny fable about stand - ins for the
dead, knows exactly how Lanthimos manipulates the camera so that characters who are fixedly separate are still held captive together in the frame, lurking in the small
silences that in his films herald a particular sort
of tragedy.
Although
Silence has been described as the third part
of Scorsese's «Faith» trilogy, the film it feels most akin to is his neglected gem from 1999, Bringing Out the
Dead.
Normally I try to weigh movies on their own terms, but director James Wan (
Dead Silence, Death Sentence) and writer / co-star Leigh Whannell just steal too much
of their style from the works
of David Fincher (Se7en, The Game), and the constant reminders to the older, better films makes Saw feel like a b - list knock off.
