of any explanation, we must ask what, in the eyes
of our national
Education Service, is the big difference between these two constructive diocesan
documents on Catholic schools?
This writer decided to visit the website
of the Catholic
Education Service (CES), and see what it had to say about this
document.
Of the 1990 apostolic constitution, Ex Corde Ecclesiae, Curran writes: «The
document theoretically limits academic freedom by truth and the common good, sees local bishops not as external to the college or university but as participants in the institution, and includes canonical provisions for those who teach theology in Catholic higher
education.»
The American
document will serve to broaden and deepen the Roman approach; the Roman
document will provide official sanctions for establishing sound sexual
education programs which embody and articulate some
of the fundamental principles
of Roman Catholic sexual morality.

In Cornwall a

education authority and various groups including, worryingly, the police, announces that a child who thinks that he or she would like to be a member
of the opposite sex, should be urged to succumb to the fantasy and begin the process that will lead to the use

of secular influence within Catholic
Education is rather vague (and a slight grammatical non-sequitur):

CONCLUSION On the Way to Life has identified some
of the features
of Modern and post-Modern culture that we need to take account
of in revitalising our religious
education and catechesis, but the
document is insufficiently critical towards Modernity, insufficiently aware
of our need to challenge its pretensions.
Here, after years
of neglect and such awful books as Weaving the Web, Icons and Here I Am all backed by the Catholic educational establishment, we have had an encouraging sign with the publication by the Bishop
of Lancaster
of his inspired
document, spiritual and practical, on Catholic
education and schools.
