of the election management body who was appointed by the past Mahama administration.

One of the fundamental responsibilities
of any Election Management Body (EMB) such as INEC is to ensure that all citizens of voting age exercise their fundamental rights to vote and be voted for.
The Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, has defended the decision
of the election management body to accept the filing fee of the Progressive People's Party (PPP), saying the Commission accepted the filing fee because they assumed the party was no longer interested pursuing the case in court.

He said having an electoral
management body to take those administrative decisions was key to the successful conduct
of this year's
elections.
According to her, the role
of Electoral
Management Bodies (EMBs) like INEC in a democracy «is to conduct free, fair and credible
elections as well as provide an enabling environment for all eligible citizens irrespective
of sex, creed or tribe to exercise their constitutional rights and privileges to vote and be voted for during periodic
elections.»
The INEC boss added, «Already,
election management bodies in our sub-regions and beyond have deployed technology in one way or the other to improve on the processes, administration and outcome
of elections.
Chairman

election management bodies in Africa to explore the potentials in the deployment
of appropriate and cost - effective technologies for the conduct

of elections, ranging from training and capacity - building for electoral officials, promotion
of inclusivity in the electoral process (youths, women, PWDs, IDPs and out -
of - country / diaspora voters), the biometric registration
of voters, delineation
of electoral constituencies, geo - referencing
of existing as well as the creation
of new polling units, establishment
of robust electronic databases, accreditation
of voters during
elections, actual voting and the speedy and more accurate collation / transmission
of results.

of the area.
