The Keith Haring exhibition includes several behind - the - scenes photographs
of Haring creating works in various printmaking studios around the world.

Old, faded snow scenes, such as that featuring the Canada lynx and snowshoe
hare, had once been
created out
of medical grade cotton topped with glitter.
Lure coursing competition attempts to
create a simulation
of a
hare's flight to evade a pursing hound.
Hundreds
of artists, including such major figures as Judy Chicago, Keith
Haring, Jenny Holzer and Robert Mapplethorpe, mobilized to
create powerful responses to the epidemic then and since, but little scholarly attention has been paid to the work that resulted.
Also drawn to the public and participatory nature
of Christo's work, in particular Running Fence, and by Andy Warhol's unique fusion
of art and life,
Haring was determined to devote his career to
creating a truly public art.
Between 1980 and 1985,
Haring produced hundreds
of these public drawings in rapid rhythmic lines, sometimes
creating as many as forty «subway drawings» in one day.
Haring completed numerous public projects in the first half
of the 80's as well, ranging from an animation for the Spectacolor billboard in Times Square, designing sets and backdrops for theaters and clubs, developing watch designs for Swatch and an advertising campaign for Absolut vodka; and
creating murals worldwide.
Haring considered the shop to be an extension
of his work and painted the entire interior
of the store in an abstract black on white mural,
creating a striking and unique retail environment.
Ever prolific,
Haring also
created small - scale multiples in aluminum, wood, concrete and terracotta, several
of which are also on view.
Haring was able to
create a paradigm shift in the art world by pushing the boundaries
of what should be considered art, and in the process he opened the role
of the artist.
He was Keith
Haring's «official» photographer,
creating an archive
of over 40,000 images recording Keith
Haring at work on public and gallery art, from his early subway drawings and his large scale commissions.
A contemporary
of Keith
Haring and Andy Warhol, Scharf has continued to remain prolific and relevant as he constantly
creates and collaborates across a wide range
of mediums.
He later turned to permanent materials, bronze in particular and started
creating sculptures
of hares in the 1980's after the image
of one «unveiled» itself to him.
Some
of the exhibitions
Haring presented were tied to his own artistic interests, such as black - light art and Xerox art, and many were
created through open calls for artist submissions — in keeping with his desire for a more inclusive art world and the use
of new channels to reach more people.

Van Dalen, who worked alongside and collaborated with the likes
of David Wojnarowicz, Martin Wong, and Keith
Haring, has lived in the same apartment on Avenue A since he first rose to prominence as a street artist in the»70s and»80s, continually
creating paintings, drawings, and collages that document the neighborhood's changes.
