of Humpday, an offbeat farce directed by Lynn Shelton.
And she didn't even write this one, which may explain why it feels even less like a film from the director
of Humpday and Your Sister's Sister.
Shelton spoke with The A.V. Club about her interest in bizarre storylines, how a last - minute casting change put the film in jeopardy, and what she thinks of the French remake
of Humpday.

After a couple
of gimmicky transgressive comedies (
Humpday and Your Sister's Sister), writer - director Lynn Shelton takes a more observant approach this time.
Featuring Aubrey Plaza (Funny People), Mark Duplass (
Humpday), and «New Girl» star Jake M. Johnson, this has all the makings
of a quirky comedy, even if there ends up not actually being any time traveling in the film.
While it possesses all the hallmarks that made Shelton's debut film,
Humpday, so entertaining (an interesting, imaginative plot, a stellar cast, hints
of poignant drama), Touchy Feely never quite makes the plight
of its characters truly engaging.
They're not alone, though:
Humpday star and mumblecore maestro Mark Duplass has a small, seething role as one
of Greenberg's unhappy former bandmates, a group that included Ivan, played by Rhys Ifans.
One
of the preeminent voice
of the mumblecore scene, Lynn Shelton has never had an A-list cast like this to work with in her past projects (
Humpday).
It helps that an actor
of Emily Blunt's (The Five - Year Engagement) stature signed on to give this project star wattage, but the film is genuinely a major step up in terms
of maturity and skill compared to Shelton and Duplass» last collaboration,
Humpday.
Thanks to Madman Entertainment, we have a DVD set featuring three
of Lynn's films:
Humpday, Your Sister's Sister and Touchy Feely.
Although we were hardly experts in the mumblecore movement *, what we'd seen
of it had not been hugely inspiring, and
Humpday single - handedly changed that: the film was so funny, endearing, and brilliantly - constructed, it single - handedly turned us around on the whole sub-genre.
We became aware
of her when she made the excellent
Humpday, and followed that up with the brilliant Your Sister's Sister.
She's been lumped into the fast and loose mumblecore movement with organic, naturalistic comedies like «
Humpday,» but she's also matured well beyond that delineation with the observational exploration
of family and lovers in the insightful, sharp and keen, «Your Sister's Sister.»
Shelton got her start making intelligent, funny comedies without the safety net
of a screenplay; films like
Humpday and Your Sister's Sister proved that «entirely improvised» didn't have to be a red flag.

I like many qualities
of Lynn Shelton's work (
Humpday, Your Sister's Sister) and her latest, low - key effort has particular promise because it has such a strong, well - chosen cast, led by Rosemarie DeWitt, Ellen Page, Scoot McNairy, Josh Pais, Allison Janney, and Ron Livingston.
Before she hit Sundance with
Humpday, Shelton explored the complications
of male relationships, specifically the «break - up»
of old friends and the desperation with which one man (played by Harvey Danger's Sean Nelson) attempts to reconnect, with My Efforless Brilliance (IFC), a slyly funny and wryly discomforting portrait.
Her previous two films,
Humpday and Your Sister's Sister, were by no means perfect, but both were notable for their characters» disarmingly credible rapport — the kind
of real - time recalibration between and among individuals that's nearly impossible to sit down and write.
When Andrew decides to contribute a film to the
Humpday fest (a real - life amateur porno festival sponsored by Seattle alternative weekly The Stranger), a piece

Mark Duplass is also acting in Greenberg, he is the director
of a pair
of more high profile mumblecore flicks, Baghead and The Puffy Chair and has starred in even more widely known MC pics like
Humpday and Hannah Takes the Stairs (also with Gerwig).
