In an international cooperation with Italian and Austrian partners, an American research group and German experts from Erlangen, Bochum and Kiel, Ulrike Sauermann and Christiane Stahl - Hennig, scientists from the Unit
of Infection Models at the German Primate Center, have tested a vaccination approach that takes these critical factors into account.

of the first IUD

These findings allowed researchers to create a chimera virus: a mouse virus with a human viral gene that can be used to test molecules that inhibit human LANA protein in an animal
model of disease, treating not only human herpes virus
infection but also its associated cancers.
Infections of other poxviruses in their natural hosts provide more realistic, yet still imperfect,

Researchers from Instituto de Medicina Molecular (iMM) Lisboa have created a chimera virus that allows the study
of molecules to treat cancers caused by human herpes virus
infection in mice
models of disease.
«Our research is the first to study Zika
infection in a mouse
model that transmits the virus in a way similar to humans,» explains Alysson R. Muotri, Ph.D., professor and director
of the Stem Cell Program at UC San Diego and co-senior author
of the study.
«We found that the syncytiotrophoblasts formed in our system recapitulated the barrier properties
of the naturally occurring cells and they resisted
infection by a
model virus and three genetically different strains
of Toxoplasma,» said co-investigator Jon P. Boyle, Ph.D., associate professor

Virgin and his team decided to explore this possibility by studying a mouse
model of chronic norovirus
infection.
By using this
model, they showed for the first time that Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonised the nasopharynx — the part
of the body which connects the back
of the nose to the back
of the mouth — long term and then subsequently migrated down into the lungs to cause chronic
infection.
The researchers next established that 25HC is protective in mouse and monkey
models of Zika virus
infection.
In the study, which included a series
of laboratory experiments, field surveys and mathematical
modeling, the presence
of various species
of dragonfly larvae reduced the
infections in frogs caused by parasitic flatworms called trematodes, said Val Beasley, professor and head
of the department
of veterinary and biomedical sciences, Penn State, who worked with Rohr and whose research group collaborated with Lucinda Johnson, senior research associate and director
of the Center for Water and the Environment, University
of Minnesota Duluth, to complete the field study.
In order to project the impact
of proposed cutbacks to U.S. - funded programs in South Africa, which has the greatest prevalence
of HIV
infection of any country, and the west African nation
of Côte d'Ivoire, which has a different kind
of epidemic and a different level
of foreign aid dependency, the researchers used a widely - published mathematical
model along with epidemiologic and cost data from each country to project the outcomes
of potential programmatic responses.
Based on these read - outs, they developed prediction
models for the analysis
of mosquitoes with unknown
infection status.

«What was really remarkable was that all
of the
models showed that strong border control would not have decreased the total number
of infections,» said Dr. Howie Weiss, professor in Georgia Tech's School
of Mathematics or College

Four
of the
models indicated that if that stricter border control is related to fewer waves
of infection.
The program is multidimensional, from cutting - edge mathematical virus
modeling to field educators teaching hunters how to reduce risk
of infection from contaminated game.
The scientists in Rodewald's department, working together with Thomas Höfer, now also plan to use the new
model to investigate the impact
of pathogenic challenges to blood formation: for example, in cancer, cachexia or
infection.
«Despite the low
infection levels
of mouse cells with oHSV, we were able to cause a delay in tumor growth in one
of the cancer
models and even cure many
of the mice in a second
model,» said first author Jennifer Leddon, who conducted much
of the laboratory work during a research experience in the Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases.
Taking a cue from AIDS researchers, who use simian immunodeficiency virus in monkeys as a
model for HIV
infection, Fred Wang
of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston set out to find a primate version
of EBV.
Using a mouse
model of HSV - 1 as well as autopsied samples
of human adult and fetal tissues, investigators from Dartmouth College's Geisel School
of Medicine found that antibodies against HSV - 1 produced by adult women or female mice could travel to the nervous systems

Ultimately, the team wanted to build a
model that could use a mouse's starting gut bacterial community to predict that mouse's risk
of infection.
Realizing they might have a potentially effective drug on their hands, Bogyo and his colleagues brought in Sonnenburg, whose lab is adept at using mouse
models of C. difficile
infection.
A daily pill to prevent HIV
infection can reduce new cases among men who have sex with men (MSM) by a third in the U.S. over the next 10 years, according to a new
modeling study published in The Journal
of Infectious Diseases and available online.
In this study, researchers at Emory University, CDC, and the University
of Washington used network - based mathematical
models of HIV transmission in a population
of MSM to estimate the impact
of applying these CDC guidelines to prevent new HIV
infections in the U.S..
While the mouse study does not prove a direct connection between Zika
infection and microcephaly, Rossi said, it does underscore the urgent need for effective animal

Efforts to combat the rapid spread
of Zika virus got a boost this week as researchers at the University
