of Zharkov's heart - felt talk with an Austrian contact whom he rescued decades ago from a Nazi concentration camp;
of Cross and Scorpio confronting each other first in a
midnight botanical gardens and then in a shadowy parking garage.

And it's in this final section where the characters in «Before
Midnight» become brutally honest with themselves, to almost agonizing and distressing levels, though not without some
moments of comedy between the fighting, the finger - pointing and the hurtful words.
While «Before
Midnight» certainly has its appealing
moments of allure and levity, it's ultimately more «This Is 40 «- style pain with much more honesty and real bite than Judd Apatow would likely ever go for, and when «Before
Midnight» bares its fangs and becomes uncomfortable there are few
moments of comedic relief or a new jaunty scene to cut to.
I braced for more
of the same in the opening
moments of «
Midnight in Paris,» wherein a Hollywood screenwriter named Gil (Owen Wilson) and his fiancee (Rachel McAdams) sit down to dine with her conservative parents in Paris.
The only decent scene in the film (one that honours the cruelty and sense
of humour
of the film's premise),
of a girl vomiting up her fat after wishing to be thinner, is quickly overwhelmed by the dead weight
of unhelpful exposition, strange inconsistencies, embarrassing line deliveries, and bald rip - offs
of scenes from films like Silent Night, Deadly Night, The Unholy, and The Relic (they've even pilfered the tongue - chewing
moment from the non-horror
Midnight Express).
I adore the
moment where Greg — the main character, who makes terrible homages to classics like
Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange and Breathless (and many, many more
of my favorite movies)-- is in his room directly above where his parents are fighting about his grades and how he won't be admitted into college the following year.
