As must now be evident, the charismatic orientation may be cloaked in the style
of those groups which call themselves charismatic or Pentecostal, but it is important to
note that the charismatic negotiation is primarily a structure and as such may give form to the world views
of persons and groups that do not adopt any
of the features or
practices of what is conventionally called charismatic religion.

I am not complaining about this merging
of values — it is right to
note that Scripture often presents us with networks
of virtues and mutually reinforcing
practices.
As Schama
notes, Rembrandt's move from Leiden to Amsterdam took him from a bastion
of Reformed conservatism to a polyglot capital in which the Remonstrants dominated politics and mercantile pragmatism made it sensible to tolerate anyone who offered a good deal, whether Mennonite, Jew, millenarian or Calvinist — anyone, that is, except Roman Catholics, who were required to
practice their faith in clandestine sanctuaries disguised within private homes.
I would rather be conservative, give Paul the benefit
of the doubt, and say that he is packing new meaning into the word (a
noted practice of his) instead
of adopting a secular idea and making Christianity fit with it.
