Multiwavelength Study
of Quiescent States of Mrk 421 with Unprecedented Hard X-Ray Coverage Provided by NuSTAR in 2013
The transfer of endothelial cells to nonpermissive temperatures (37 °C) resulted in cell differentiation and the induction
of a quiescent state.
His lab has developed a screen to identify small molecules that revert PSCs to their quiescent phenotype using the accumulation of lipid droplets as a hallmark
of the quiescent state.

Inflation measures have been edging higher in the United
States in recent months, in contrast to much
of the developed world, where price pressures have remained
quiescent.
The stages are: arousal (alertness to possible danger); freezing (momentarily putting flight or fight on hold while assessing danger); «flight or fight»; tonic immobility; collapsed immobility (fainting in fear); and
quiescent immobility (a subsequent
state of rest that promotes healing).
«Our organotypic models demonstrate the power
of the microenvironment by showing that normal cells in their native architecture naturally steer fully malignant, genotypically aberrant tumor cells into a
quiescent state,» Ghajar says.
If no cell production is required, the stem cells remain in a
quiescent state,» explained Dr. Christian Berger
of the Institute
of Genetics at Mainz University.
Many
of these progenitors are maintained in a
quiescent state or «standby mode» and are ready to differentiate in response to immune challenges (such as stress, infection or disease).
Their findings outlined four distinct cellular phases
of sperm stem cells maturation, revealing how the stem cells progress from a «
quiescent»
state, to a «proliferation»
state during which stem cells divide, to a final «differentiation»
state when stem cells mature to become sperm.
«Satellite cells can sit around for practically a lifetime in a
quiescent state, not doing much
of anything.
Interestingly, this
state appears to differ from that
of quiescent fibroblasts in the uninjured heart, as it is resistant to proliferative stimuli.
We will use these data to characterize novel genes that regulate the
quiescent and proliferative
states of β - cells.
MSCs are considered adult or somatic stem cells and remain in a non-proliferative,
quiescent state during most
of their lifetime, until stimulated by the signals triggered by tissue renewal, damage and remodeling processes.
I will discuss our latest results showing that satellite cells in their homeostatic
quiescent state are equipped with quality control mechanisms to preserve their fitness, and how age - associate alterations in these protective mechanisms lead to stem cell loss
of function and regenerative capacity.
Such insight will uncover the manner by which these cells exit from the
quiescent state and become activated and drawn towards sites
of inflammation and injury in order to trigger and enhance tissue regeneration.
We also show that a general repression
of translation, mediated by the phosphorylation
of translation initiation factor eIF2 at serine 51 (P - eIF2α), is required to maintain the
quiescent state.
Resident stem cells remain mostly in a «
quiescent»
state, and the population
of stem cells is maintained indefinitely.
The ordinary thinking process becomes
quiescent and a distinctive
state of psycho - physiological «restful alertness», a wakeful but deeply restful
state, is gained [37, 38].
