Although the cause
of HCM has not been clearly identified, the fact that the condition is more prevalent in certain breeds (including Maine Coon,
Ragdoll, British Shorthair, Sphynx, Chartreux and Persian
cats) and that mutations
of several cardiac (heart) genes have been identified in some
cats with this disease suggests that genetics plays a role.
Breeds included domestic short - haired (94
cats), domestic long - haired (15), domestic medium - haired (11), Maine Coon (7), British Shorthair (6), Siamese (6),
Ragdoll (3), Abyssinian (1), Balinese (1), Himalayan (1), and Savannah (1), whereas 4
cats were
of mixed breed.
Breeds
of concern include Sphynx, Bengal, Maine Coon,
Ragdoll, Siberian, Scottish Fold, Norwegian Forest
Cat and Persian among others.
