The Christ as the Lamb of peace as well as the
vision of Shalom in Isaiah 11 and Ezekiel 37 and Revelations 21 and 22 gives a powerful dynamics of peace in the ecumenical movement.
There are many promises
of shalom in the Hebrew Bible, too many for us to examine them all.
I will make a
covenant of shalom with them; it shall be an everlasting covenant with them; and I will bless them and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary among them forevermore.
Jesus»
extension of shalom beyond the borders of Israel was quiet and at times ambiguous, but the church heard the risen Lord say, «Go therefore and make disciples of all nations» (Matt.
But as expressions
of the shalom for which we were created and to which we are to witness, these visions are what people of faith live out even when the world refuses such visions.
Several
aspects of the shalom of creation are particularly important for the issues involved in nuclear - age peacemaking.
It is also from the prophets that we receive the great gift of the visionary
images of shalom toward which God is moving us: swords into plowshares, peaceable kingdoms, joy and peace such that the trees clap their hands, new covenants written on the heart.
Sadly, most of these passages have to do with betrayal by friends, which constitutes a terrible
breach of shalom.
That seems to have been the basic understanding of the Hebrew people.5 They justified war as necessary to establish secure borders within which shalom could be nurtured and practiced, but the prophets dare to suggest an extension
of shalom beyond the borders.

It would be characterized by many of the marks
of shalom with which we are familiar:
In effect, the vocation of faithful community is as witness to the
possibilities of shalom in the world and to the source of such shalom possibilities in God.
Moments before the 40 - something stood, I had shared about the biblical
concept of shalom.
David may not build the temple, for he is a man of war; Solomon shall build it, for he is a
man of shalom (1 Chron.
In the great poetic debate in Job, Eliphaz includes safety from wild animals as
part of shalom.
The familiar agricultural
description of shalom makes this vision earthy, material, far removed from «pie in the sky by and by.»
Liberation, return, safety, healing, cleansing, new hearts, justice, freedom from hunger, freedom from depredations by wild animals, rule by David — the whole

It is to be a
place of shalom where salvation flows through all aspects of life.
And I reminded myself that this is part of the work of resurrection, the making things right, the covenantal
partnership of shalom, the work Jesus has invited us into alongside of him: these moments of quiet #MeToo far from social media and attention of celebrities, the ones uncelebrated and unacknowledged.
It is a refusal to participate in that nuclear idolatry that presumes to usurp the sovereignty of the
God of shalom» (pp. 34 - 35) But does another idol lurk behind this call for peace?
In the midst of the reckoning unfolding in our culture, I want now to quietly say to those of us who are engaged in the
work of shalom, we can miss our own hearts at times.
Most of our best - intentioned efforts seemed more like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic than like taking part in God's work of gradual
bringing of Shalom.
Or I decide to save the world and so march into the social justice battles ready to establish a
bit of shalom for someone else first.
In reflection on the promise in Revelation that on the
day of shalom «there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away,» Wolterstorff writes: «I shall try to keep the wound from healing, in recognition of our living still in the old order of things.
For example, Isaiah's
portrait of shalom is when people «beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.»

But God calls his / her people to be
signs of Shalom, the vanguard of God's kingdom, a community of cultural change.
As W. Sibley Towner of Union Theological Seminary in Virginia has stated, «Far from being an extraordinary ideal, shalom is the norm which is to be contrasted to the extraordinary out - of - orderness of warfare, disease, and the like» («Tribulations and Peace: The
Fate of Shalom in Jewish Apocalyptic,» Horizons in Biblical Theology, vol.
In their indictment of war as waged in the time of the monarchy, the prophets charged that Israel had abandoned trust in Yahweh for the sake of trust in its own powers, and had abandoned Yahweh's
goal of shalom for all in favor of the pursuit of prosperity and power for a few.
According to Hanson, the true
antonym of shalom is chaos; war is an antonym because it is the quintessence of chaos.
In the old
tradition of shalom for Israel only, the apostles asked him, «Lord, is this the time when you will restore the kingdom to Israel?»
