I struggled to keep track
of the Varl for a while though, maybe it's because I'm a silly Human.
Part of the game follows the Varl (Vikings), while the majority of your journey will be spent with a ragtag mix
of Varl and humans led by a hunter named Rook, and a Varl legend by the name of Iver.
You'll play The Banner Saga from multiple perspectives, including a human clan led by an archer named Rook, and a caravan
of varl and humans led by one of the few diplomatically minded varl you'll meet.

The Banner Saga series is pretty big, but if you are unfamiliar, you take on the role
of a leader
of a clan
of viking - like people in a world where humans and giants (called
Varl) have been beset by numerous woes including a sun that has stopped moving and a race
of invading humanoid creatures (called Dredge) are driving large populations
of folk from their land.
The star
of the show for me is the berserk
Varl Bolverk.
The only way you'll be able to upgrade them is by taking on the hordes
of dredge that seem to appear at every turn, as well as the occasional band
of human brigands or renegade
varl.
Which is to say nothing
of the major differences between the humans and
varl's skillsets.
With a combination
of humans and
Varl, players can easily think their way through most fights taking minimal casualties, but one little tweak would make combat way better.
Not long into The Banner Saga's opening, the dredge return mysteriously, pouring over the land in volume the likes
of which even the oldest
varl can't recall ever seeing.
Varl, as you might imagine, are lumbering hulks that do lots
of damage but aren't necessarily the most nimble nor defensive - minded fighters, while humans can use a greater variety
of weapons, like bows, spears, and small axes.
Players will spend a good chunk
of the game as a
varl war party transporting a human prince to their capital as part
of a tradition which signifies the alliance between the two races.
The most notable addition to the library
of fantasy creatures is the giant, antler - bearing
varl and the fearsome fleshless dredge.
The
varl half
of the story is plenty interesting and produces most
of the valuable exposition about the politics and history
of the world, but it is Rook's story that truly steals the spotlight.
The story
of The Banner Saga is surprisingly deep, lasting a solid 10 - 12 hours and telling a well - crafted tale
of the invading dredge who must be stopped by an alliance
of man and
varl.
While at first some
of the character models — particularly the giant
Varl ones — look confusingly similar, they do become individualized as the characters become more fleshed out.
To boot, most
of the different
Varl character classes have names that are variants on shield, war, and master.
With morale rock bottom, and humans and
Varl alike dying en route to the next settlement, I was offered an unlikely lifeline as the next narrative quandary centred on the theft
of supplies.
After taking down Bellower, the caravan
of humans and
Varl needs to continue its quest to get to safety, away from the powerful Dredge, and despite their victory, the road does not get any easier and once again the game switches between two very different perspectives.
The convoy
of survivors, fighters, and
Varl runs on morale and supplies, and both
of them need to be managed to make sure that they keep moving forward and that the battles are not made harder by a penalty to the willpower
of the selected heroes.
Whether you journey with the
varl as they seek to return to their capital, or command a ranger as his village is razed by the dredge, the unique array
of perspectives — alongside a staggering amount
of lore and world building — provide an environment rich in legend.
There is plenty
of variety here in terms
of who can be added to your roster, ranging from the hulking horned
Varl to agile archers and various Viking - themed warriors.

of a shame that we never get to see any female
Varl.
