with writers from a variety
of genres, I have learned a lot about the steps necessary to achieve success in this very competitive field.
We feel secure if we are sure that our book includes a gripping opening hook that's been approved by our
critique group; characters that our beta readers have said are «relatable»; and a plot arc that unfolds in accordance
with the most popular method
of how to write well currently on the market.
In 1996, I attended the Orange County Christian Writers Conference and joined a
critique group with some
of the people I met there.
As I went through the manuscript doing rewrites, I realized nearly every issue my editor had
with my work turned out to be something I'd added or subtracted at the request
of various
critique groups.
My
critique group (who are my key allies) I've been
with for years came out
of ACFW, but they have been supportive
of the direction God has given me.
We're lucky to belong to an organization that sets up
critique groups with a very sensible set
of rules.
I do recommend
critique groups for new writers, but remember to take their advice
with many grains
of salt.
We offer two workshops a month on craft and the business
of writing, as well as
critique groups, writers theatres, networking
with other Pacific Northwest writers
groups, and general encouragement and support.
I do still encourage the use
of critique groups and beta readers as a first step in learning the ins and outs
of the craft and business
of writing, but keep in mind that most
of what you hear in a
critique group needs to be taken
with a grain
of salt.

critique group had to do
with the maturity levels
of child characters.

I love the idea
of a
critique group — and I'm so glad you have a good one — but unfortunately my one experience
with a workshopping class was not helpful or positive.
So that's what I set out to do, slowly but surely, by torturing my
critique group with all
of my drafts and versions and projects until one day, one time, something just sort
of... clicked.
I shared this
with my
critique group and bought you a cup
of coffee — the first time I've done that for an author here.
This second
group was somewhat less casual and included members
with varying degrees
of writing experience and
critiquing skills.
