Even though Bloody Days tries to walk the walk and talk the talk, ultimately it
feels less like a creative homage to a
cult film
classic and more like a shallow imitation with a hint
of Tarantino flair.
It reminds me
of those
feel good, but action packed series
of the 90s like the A-Team and Star Trek and with a few more series, I'm certain Z - Nation will become equally a
cult classic
Refn clearly has a love for the likes
of Walter Hill and John Carpenter, as well as
cult classics like Silent Running and Logan's Run, a film he was looking to remake for some time; von Trier has grander aspirations as a filmmaker, a compulsive need to make the audience
feel something, anything, at the end
of his works.
In that
cult classic debut, set in a lovingly re-created 1988, upsetting
feelings of teen loneliness and rage amid suburban comfort were burnished by cannily selected sightings
of forgotten pop icons.
It's admirable
of Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. to recognize that John Carpenter's «The Thing» didn't warrant a remake, but there are so many similarities in this mostly unnecessary prequel to the 1982
cult classic that it
feels like a retread anyway.
His next two are a sequel and a remake
of two
cult classic films in the hard sci - fi genre that will only continue to stretch your minds and cinematic intelligence with the upcoming Blade Runner 2049 starring Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, and a crap ton
of other people while his next project is the Watchmen
of sci - fi movies where people fear that a faithful adaptation and remake
of Dune
feels near impossible, but if there was somebody to do it, it's Denis.
From his start at Disney, to his background in baseball, his wacky comedies, insane list
of cult classics, and current resurgence, it
feels like there's nothing he can't do.
Though his
cult classic is nearly 30 years old, its themes
of surveillance, income inequality, and the sinking suspicion that the people in charge are way more sinister than we ever realized still
feel very potent.
The short film in question is Papers, Please: The Short Film, based on the
cult classic 2013 indie title, Papers, Please (one
of my personal favorite indie titles, which I now
feel I underrated in my original review).
