of damage on Theresa May.

It will be around this table that the big dogs
of Mrs May's Cabinet will find their zen
with customs union, hard or soft borders and the transition period.
The move - which comes ahead
of a major Brexit speech by Jeremy Corbyn next Monday - will enrage many Leave supporters, who say leaving the EU
customs union will allow Britain to strike its own trade deals
with other countries.
That has meant that May's government has been repeatedly defeated over the EU withdrawal bill,
with peers inflicting 15 defeats on issues such as the
customs union, the Irish border and removing the precise date
of Brexit — 29 March 2019 — from the legislation.
In the absence
of agreed solutions, the United Kingdom will maintain full alignment
with those rules
of the Internal Market and
Customs Union.»
The trouble
with this policy is that the government also wants frictionless trade
with Europe - something which relies on membership
of the
customs union.

customs union stifles Britain's ability to trade because its member states are prohibited from striking their own free trade deals
with nations outside

He said: «For many months we in Labour have been demanding the fullest possible access to the single market, emphasising the risks

with our EU partners, emphasising the need for transitional arrangements and the need for entrenchment

Redwood's argument is that the UK is bound into the EU's trade policy by its membership
of the
customs union and that the EU's trade policy is to have no agreements
with other countries at all — thereby leaving both us and them on back - up WTO trade terms when it comes to the rest
of the world.
«How can it be that our party, by supporting a
customs union but not the single market», she asked, «can be at peace
with the free movement
of tractors, grain and widgets, but not people?»
If May was tempted to avoid defeat in the Commons by caving in to calls for a full
customs union with the EU, she risks the possible resignation
of eurosceptics like Liam Fox, Boris Johnson and — despite denials to the contrary — possibly even the Brexit secretary, David Davis.

A growing number
of MPs, councillors and activists want the party to commit to staying in the single market and
customs union at the very least,
with some saying he should hold open the option
of campaigning at a future election to stay in the EU to safeguard jobs.
It adds: «Whilst the easiest way to stay in the single market and
customs union would be to remain in the EU, we acknowledge the result
of the referendum and believe that at the very least we have a responsibility to limit the damage associated
with a reckless and cavalier Tory Brexit.
What difference does it make to them, since Northern Ireland remains a part
of the UK
with or without a
customs union?
I know my emphasis on striking trade agreements
with countries outside Europe has led to questions about whether Britain seeks to remain a member
of the EU's
Customs Union.
Mr Corbyn has been hit by a string
of rebellions over Labour's Brexit policy,
with around 60
of his MPs bitterly opposed to the party's official position that leaving the EU should also mean quitting the single market and
customs union.
He said: «What we plan is a tariff - free trade relationship
with Europe, a form
of customs union, and a trade relationship that guarantees our manufacturing industry and our service industries can continue to trade
with Europe and they can continue to trade
with us.»
