Missouri Synod theologians had traditionally affirmed the inerrancy
of the Bible, and, although such a term can mean many things, in practice it meant certain rather specific things: harmonizing
of the various biblical narratives; a somewhat ahistorical reading
of the Bible in which there was little room
for growth or development
of theological understanding; a tendency to hold that God would not have used within the Bible literary forms such as myth, legend, or saga; an unwillingness to reckon with possible creativity on the part
of the evangelists who tell the
story of Jesus in the Gospels or to consider what it might mean that they write that
story from a post-Easter perspective; a general reluctance to consider that the canons
of historical exactitude which we take as givens might have been
different for the biblical authors.

It wasn't the summer that brought an end to my doubt, but it was the summer I encountered a
different Jesus, a Jesus who requires more from me than intellectual assent and emotional allegiance; a Jesus who associated with sinners and infuriated the religious; a Jesus who broke the rules and refused to cast the first stone; a Jesus who gravitated toward sick people and crazy people, homeless people and hopeless people; a Jesus who preferred
story to exposition and metaphor to syllogism; a Jesus who answered questions with more questions, and demands
for proof with demands
for faith... a Jesus who healed each person differently and saved each person differently; a Jesus who had no list
of beliefs to check off, no doctrinal statements to sign, no surefire way to tell who was «in» and who was «out»; a Jesus who loved after being betrayed, healed after being hurt, and forgave while being nailed to a tree; a Jesus who asked his disciples to do the same...
The
story is one
of mounting personal agony
for the two fathers, Kumalo and the elder Jarvis, as in
different ways they search
for their sons, Kumalo
for the release

for his act, and Jarvis
for the significance
of his son's life which was devoted to the improvement

It wasn't just about the subject matter — although it's tricky to write about such a tender and intimate time in a person's life, to tell your own
story while still holding space
for stories that are so
different than your own, to attempt to shepherd people well in the liminal spaces
of their faith journeys — but it was also just the season
of life with being pregnant with our fourth and then giving birth and suddenly having four tinies between the ages
of 9 and newborn meant I had a lot less time with a lot less energy (and even less sleep!)
Fascinating, that the idea
of sharing a meal between people
of different faiths, getting to know each other, values, reasons
for beliefs, the history, the personal
stories of why their faith matters... and seeing the conversation

I believe in the power
of the blood
of Jesus but now this leaves me afraid to admit it,
for I'm already pegged as superstitious and into magic — seems no
different than the boogyman
stories my once conservative church tried to lay on me, that my protection is in their oversight, that if I leave them my life would be destroyed, and more — we must be careful in our ernest seeking after truth that we don't become what we have despised and that we don't put on others our perspectives and understandings.

The reading pleasure that results from this conversation —
different for different readers — is not merely the simple pleasure

Jeremy thanks
for your comments alot
of this i never really thought about before until you provoked me to seek the truth in the word it is what we all should be doing finding the truth
for ourselves God wants to reveal mysterys if we are open to hear.If we have been christians awhile we just take the word
of whoevers preaching or whichever clip we see on god tube its knowledge but not revelation.Because the
story sounds plausible we tag that on to our belief
for example
for many years i believed that the rich young rulers problem was money so the way to deal with that problem is to give it away and be a follower
of Jesus sounds plausible.Till you realise every believers situation is
different so the message has to be universal. So the reason its not about money because it excludes those that do nt have it and does nt make room
for those that do have it but do nt worship it.The rich young ruler was not a bad person he lived by a good moral code but he made money his idol he put that before God.The word says we shall not have any idols thats a sin and a wicked one.In fact there wasnt any room in his heart
for Jesus that is a tragedy. So when we see the message is about Idolatry we all have areas that we chose not to submit to God thats universal everyone
of us whether we are rich or poor.I believe we are unaware that we have these idols what are some
of them that was revealed to me our partners our children our work our church our family i can sense some
of you are getting fidgetty.
Luke, placing the

If one destroyed the Genesis
story of creation and substituted the gradual emergence

of God from the evidence
of creation.
Please don't listen to these people on here they have so many
different views and ideas
of their own but don't listen to them they have closed their heart to God and are doing Satans work
of misleading people away from the Almighty they look
for men who like to have their ears tickled so don't take mine our anyone else's word
for it look it up
