of abstract artist well trodden by now.

Students engaged with it really
well, partly due to the variety
of artists that I presented to them but also due to the potential for an
abstract approach to the project.
Artist, Sandy Gray, who regularly visits, paints some lovely landscapes
of the surrounding area and some wonderful
abstract paintings as
well.
Mark Dagley is equally renowned for being a publisher and for playing guitar in the seminal punk bands the Girls and Hi Sheriffs
of Blue during the 1970s and»80s, but given the strength
of his current exhibition, he should be
best known for being a reductive abstractionist — that is, an
abstract artist who approaches painting through its most basic means and language.
Hon Chi Fun is one
of Hong Kong's most respected visual
artists,
best known for his
abstract paintings and serigraphic prints that reflect his interest in Taoism and phenomenology through the expression
of circles.
The show's early galleries think past boundaries
of media — Imogen Cunningham's double - exposed portrait
of Martha Graham hangs next to a Charles Burchfield sunburst — and
of race and gender, most persuasively via the juxtaposition
of a blah
abstract totem by Robert Laurent with a
better 1931 bust by Nancy Elizabeth Prophet, an
artist of the New Negro Movement.

BEST EXHIBITION SCHEDULE AT A MUSEUM IN UPHEAVAL The Met's, which included shows
of camera - phone images exchanged by 12 pairs
of artists; the nearly
abstract etchings
of the 17th - century Dutch
artist Hercules Segers; Marsden Hartley's Maine paintings; an astounding survey
of Japanese bamboo art and basketry (through Feb. 4); and,
of course, the recently opened shows
of David Hockney's paintings (through Feb. 25) and Michelangelo's drawings.
Vicente (1903 - 2001), a Spanish - born
artist who lived most
of his life in New York, was
best known for his collages, and a big red
abstract - floral one greets visitors at the entrance.
Porter once wrote: «The realist thinks he knows ahead
of time what reality is, and the
abstract artist what art is, but it is in its formality that realist art excels, and the
best abstract art communicates an overwhelming sense
of reality.»
Reacting to the range
of works on view, which included a selection from the
artist's Concorde series (1997), still lifes, portraits, and
abstract works created using dye or developing fluid on light sensitive paper, Morton noted «what makes Tillmans's
best work sing: the ability, through looking a little, and loving a little, to turn events in our visual lives into vivid, everyday poetry, with all the pleasure and knotty exegesis that implies.
As
well as the generally accepted international stars, there are some less familiar
artists here too, from Lee Krasner, Pollock's wife, with a huge swirling
abstract, to the exquisite, minutely rendered, tangled, painted embroideries
of Mark Tobey.
Then the show turns to work by the second group, an imposing cadre
of trained
artists working in Los Angeles like Betye Saar, John Outterbridge, Senga Nengudi and Noah Purifoy, who worked for decades at the margins
of the mainstream, exploring aspects
of assemblage and found materials as
well as political expression in often
abstract forms.
It should be noted that while the overall effect
of Murray's work is one
of abstraction, and the
artist described herself as an
abstract painter in an interview included in the 1987 catalogue, there are many representational elements and references in her paintings, in a stylized style emerging from cartoons, comics, and graffiti as
well as from pop
artists like Claes Oldenburg: works are shaped like shoes or cups and contains stylized
abstracted but identifiable figuration and still - life imagery.
Continuing the Warholian reference, on show will be a series
of large scale unique silkscreened portraits
of the
artist as Che Guevara, Joseph Beuys, Elvis Presley amongst others, as
well as works based on Warhol's urine oxidation paintings,
abstract works made by pissing on copper metallic painted canvas Turk takes a Gestalt approach to cliché and iconic imagery subverting our sense
of what we think we are seeing.
Solo and group exhibitions showcase
abstract as
well as figurative work from a diverse body
of artists from the U.S., Asia, Latin America and Europe.
Curator Gary Garrels worked with six
abstract painters — Mark Grotjahn, Wade Guyton, Mary Heilmann, Amy Sillman, Charline von Heyl, and Christopher Wool — to select one
of their own recent paintings as
well as works by other
artists who have influenced their thinking.
Using a palette
of the same four colors, Cranston reworks an
abstract painting by one
of the key figures in Modernism, Swiss / French
artist, architect and designer Charles - Édouard Jeanneret,
better known as Le Corbusier (1887 - 1965) in six variations, identical in form and composition but in different color combinations.
Brilliantly combining world - serious and Miami playful, the Rubell Family Collection offered a mini-retrospective selected from its more than 6,300 works and 800
artists, as
well as work commissioned for the exhibition from the likes
of Mark Flood, Aaron Curry, Kaari Upson, Will Boone and, from newcomer Lucy Dodd, a room - long
abstract painting inspired by Picasso's Guernica (watch her prices jump — the Rubells are opinion - makers, as we've seen with Hernan Bas among others).
Throughout this process a distinct distillation
of choices developed for each
artist that is wide - ranging but particular: both figurative and
abstract, sculptures and some works on paper have been selected in addition to paintings, and historical as
well as contemporary works, are juxtaposed.
In some ways a literal record
of the performative and durational qualities
of this enterprise, Beck's wall drawing will hold evidence
of the
artists hand as
well as
abstract segments
of his entire body, imprinted full - scale and photo - negative like against the ephemeral yet sturdy packing tape ground.
In her blog,
artist Joanne Mattera reports on her trip to Art Basel Miami Beach, as
well as six other satellite fairs (out
of twelve), and gives an overview
of abstract work
of interest.
With 53
of the show's
artists - almost as many as Bonami included in his entire biennial - her overstuffed fraction included numerous women working in
abstract painting or fabric, notably a knockout Sheila Hicks tower that was, hands down, the
best work in the show (Pillar
of Inquiry / Supple Column, 2013 - 14).

well as a magnificent masterpiece by Chinese
artist Ai Weiwei.
The luridly colored spray paint conjures the machismo and brio
of the
best street
artists, while the
abstract gestures recall
Abstract Expressionists like Mark Rothko and Richard Pousette - Dart.
O'Keeffe, known
best for her close - up views
of flowers and desert landscapes, was a highly innovative
abstract painter and among the first
artists anywhere to make purely non-representational paintings.
That
abstract art is back in full force was confirmed by the inclusion
of Michelle Grabner — as
artist — as
well as four
artists whose work she had selected — as curator — for the current Whitney Biennial.

artist known for her vivid, luminous paintings which cull naturalistic imagery from an

well as her nature infused ceramic works, presents a series
of painted porcelain vignettes.
An original member
of Park Place, the historic New York
artist collective, Novros is
well known for his large,
abstract paintings on irregularly shaped, multipaneled canvases.
Bradford (b. 1961)-- a Los Angeles — based
artist and MacArthur Foundation «genius» award recipient — works in a variety
of media but is
best known for his often enormously scaled collages on canvas, which are akin to
abstract paintings.
Also navigating translucency as a motif, a curtain titled Don't be an actress (yellow) constructed
of semi-transparent fabric printed with
abstract forms hangs over the entrance doorway to the gallery, telling
of both the
artist's father's background in stage design as
well as her interest in the amount
of information carried into a large - scale digital print from an analogue source.

Richard Meier is an American
abstract artist and Modernist architect
best known for designing such iconic museums as the Barcelona Museum
of Contemporary Art and the Getty Center in Los Angeles.
The exhibition will consist
of a series
of works
of a standard size, in which the
artist invokes
abstract and representational visual languages, as
well as his own status and behaviour as a painter.
This transition towards
abstract forms and shapes is
best illustrated in Kandinsky's Study for Composition # 8, 1909, a turning point in the
artist's vision, where recognizable forms — people, church towers, cupolas and hills co-exist with
abstract shapes and pure fields
of color.
Works by the earlier generation
of artists represented in the show can be loosely situated within geometric abstraction and
abstract constructivism, influenced by
artists such as Piet Mondrian (1872 — 1944) and groups such as De Stijl (founded 1917) and the ZERO movement
of the 1950s and 60s, as
well as the American Colour Field painters.
