access to professions through widening the scope
of its intake.
The Chartered Institute
of Building (CIOB) welcomes the final report by the Panel on Fair
Access to the
Professions.
The CIOB has highlighted a number
of areas where increased Government funding should be considered and barriers that need
to be removed if
access to the
professions is
to be improved.
Nearly one in five participating doctors (17 %) cited cuts as their main concern with regards
to their
profession, with many stating that they feel hampered by the Health Minister's reforms as patients struggle
to access the basic level
of care they deserve.
The Forum is currently jointly addressing the challenges put forward by Alan Milburn MPs report
of the Panel on Fair
Access to the
Professions.
Such concerns have led the European Commission (EC)
to develop an ambitious strategy for human resources and mobility, based on four priorities: making science more attractive for young people; improving training and mobility opportunities
to facilitate the
access of researchers
to new knowledge and skills, and
to attract researchers
to Europe; developing better job opportunities for researchers by closing the gap between academia and industry; and improving public recognition
of the researcher's status and

profession, and reach students through social media platforms sharing their successes through the «UpNext» free college
access tool and «College Signing Day» and «Beating The Odds Summit» events.
Many elite colleges and universities no longer offer undergraduate teacher preparation programs, and many teacher preparation programs are housed within less selective colleges.5 Nonetheless, the academic profiles
of teaching candidates in regional comprehensive universities are high relative
to other programs offered in those schools.6 Furthermore, many teacher preparation programs do not have admission criteria beyond those
of their home institution, and only have
access to a pool
of candidates already admitted
to the overarching college or university.7 For these reasons among others, the average SAT scores
of students going into education have historically been lower than those
of their peers entering other
professions, although there is some evidence that this is shifting.8
Unequal
access to opportunities for developing life skills plays a role in the over-representation
of those with independent school backgrounds
of the UK's top
professions.
