If all the different groups listed above aren't proof enough that people are getting
on board with
action to create a clean energy future, a 2017 Pew Research survey showed that an overwhelming majority
of people worldwide believe the
climate crisis is a major threat — with respondents in 13 countries, mostly in Latin America and Africa, identifying global
climate change as the topmost threat to their nation.
Proponents
of climate action see the prospect
of EPA's rules as a
not - so - secret weapon for motivating Congress to move faster
on legislation, which the Obama administration and many lawmakers have said is a better way to mitigate
climate change while minimizing costs.
Yet a leading U.S. Senate advocate
of legislative
action on climate seems to be starting off like a sprinter, perhaps because his legislation is pegged to estimates
of the Social Cost
of Carbon that don't account for the possibility that
climate change will turn out to be catastrophically costly.
I differ too in that I'm an environmentalist and think generally global warming is a farce and we'd be better to spend the money
on stopping pollution
of rivers and oceans, buying the amazon, and researching and finding
action plans for when oceans do rise, as they will one day, man made
climate change or
not.
Sadly, the reality
of Keystone XL has been masked by $ 10s
of millions (if
not $ 100s
of millions)
of propaganda distorting its economic implications and downplaying its
climate change impacts (in the shadow
of $ billions spent to undermine understanding
of and
action on climate change).
As we point out in other posts, many (if
not all) political arguments for
action on climate change seem to be out
of kilter with the «consensus» — take, for example, our many posts
on Caroline Lucas, who invents the «consensus»
on the fly.
We're
not offering a «counter-claim» about the science, because our position is that even the concrete, incontrovertible, unassailable fact
of human influence
on global warming and
climate change does
not, by itself, make a case for
action.
The current negotiating text for Rio +20 does
not fully and explicitly recognise the urgent need to act
on climate change as part
of a global
action plan for delivering sustainable development.
We believe it does
not because those causing
climate change have had clear ethical duties to reduce the threat
of climate change once they were put
on notice that their
actions were likely putting others at great risk.
The reasons include a lack
of relevant city policies and
action plans; existence
of regulations
on urban planning and environment which have
not been adjusted to manage
climate change; slow response to
climate disasters due to lack
of capacity and resources; and lack
of public awareness
on climate variability and
climate change - induced hazard mitigation.
While publics in both rich and poor nations are generally supportive
of their own governments taking
action to curb greenhouse gas emissions, in principle many people believe that wealthy societies,
not poor economies, should take
on more
of the responsibility for addressing
climate change.
Bast and Spencer's beef, however, isn't with the scientific consensus
on whether man - made
climate change is happening (although you'd be forgiven for thinking so, being that a favorite tactic
of those who oppose
action on climate change is to simply deny, deny, deny).
«Trump doesn't speak for America
on climate change —
not for the majority
of U.S. citizens who support
action on climate change, nor for the 2,500 cities, counties, states, businesses and universities that have pledged their support for the Paris Agreement goals.»
A constant theme
of the Progressive Left is that the fundamental reason why America is
not taking effective
action on climate change is that
action is being blocked by right - wing politicians in the US Congress and in numerous state governments who are being funded by fossil fuel interests to oppose anti-carbon legislation.
However the platform does
not directly mention
climate change or global warming, and does
not acknowledge the clear scientific consensus
on both the degree
of human attribution and the urgency
of action on the issue
of climate change.
Lord Stern, the former World Bank chief economist whose landmark report
on the economics
of climate change warned the world risked plunging into economic depression if
action was
not taken urgently
on greenhouse gases, said carbon trading was a «key plank» in dealing with
climate change.
