of the church - world relationship leads to a lack
of concern
with the intelligibility
of the Christian
story for our
age, we have seen that Hauerwas» understanding is essentialist.
Time to just admit that it is a collection
of stories and opinions written by men (obviously)
with a bronze
age mentality and understanding
of the world.
And to hundreds
of millions the most radiant day
of all the bright and dark days in the
story of mankind is that which saw his birth — no wonder an earlier and more imaginative
age made it a day
of weird unearthly beauty, when a strange star hung low above the city
of David and a multitude
of angels broke
with sudden glory the silence
of the dawn.
The result would be a rather full historical reconstruction
of events beginning
with historical patriarchs and tracking the Bible
story through Solomon's Golden

of tragedy and suffering, we have many
stories that produce a fleeting emotion, but few that evoke anything more lasting.

We have some evidence that children
of this
age can deal successfully
with parables and other imaginative
stories in just this manner.
