currencies.
Another highlight
of Singapore
Airlines» program is that they are transfer partners
of all
of the major transferable points
currencies like American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou Rewards, and Starwood Preferred Guest.
However, it's more common for
airlines to devalue their
currencies — most often by increasing the amount
of miles needed for award flights.
There are 16
airline loyalty / rewards programs into which you can transfer Starpoints but which do not accept transfers from any
of the other major transferable
currencies:
In addition, by earning Membership Rewards you're collecting a
currency that can be transferred to a number
of airlines and used in a number
of different ways while, if you just earn Avios, you really have very few options available to you outside
of British Airways
Since I already planned on using their native
currencies (or transferring from Membership Rewards and SPG), does the devaluation
of a partner
airline matter much?
They're a
currency that can be converted to a number
of loyalty programs I value (like Hyatt Gold Passport, Singapore
Airlines Kris Flyer and Korean Air SkyPass) at a 1:1 ratio and with the 2 x earnings on dining and travel (two categories I seem to spend quite a lot in!)
SPG Starpoints give you great flexibility when it comes to redemption; they're also one
of the few hotel
currencies that are easily and efficiently converted into
airline miles.
Now the 40,000 miles are neither
airlines miles or hotel points but they are what I call «flexible
currency» or simply cash that can be redeemed for any sort
of travel expense such as hotels,
airline fees, baggage charges and many more.
Hawaiian
Airlines also isn't a member
of any alliance, but it does have a partnership agreement with American, which means you can book award seats using AAdvantage
currency.
Up until last year that would have been a reasonable deal for an
airline currency like American's but their recent spate
of devaluations has seen the value
of AAdvantage Miles plummet.
If someone reads a comment like the one I've highlighted (or a similar one elsewhere) and gets the idea that points can be worth 21 cents each, then there's a chance that they'll end up over valuing a
currency and therefore overpaying in one
of the many «sales» that
airlines and hotels offer on their points.
I covered these options in depth back in November, but they allow you to redeem Marriott Rewards points for a seven - night (or five - night) hotel stay plus a set amount
of points or miles in your chosen
airline currency.
Interestingly, American
Airlines isn't a transfer partner
of any
of the three major bank
currencies so, if I want to earn AAdvantage Miles outside
of my flight bookings, I have to transfer over SPG points to my AAdvantage account....
Citi ThankYou Rewards points are getting more and more valuable as Citi keeps adding to its list
of transfer partners (Turkish
Airlines and Jet Airways are recent additions) and, as rewards
currencies go, you could do a lot worse.
A bit like death and taxes one
of the things you can be sure
of in this world is that
airlines will devalue their
currencies... and I like to mitigate the risk
of that as much as possible.
Last week and this week I'm taking a look at each
of those
currencies individually and listing out the
airline and, where relevant, hotel rewards programs those
currencies can be transferred into.
If you have no apparent, immediate need for the AAdvantage Miles — Starpoints can be converted into a lot
of other
airline currencies so it's a more useful holding
currency than AAdvantage miles.
Alaska
Airlines is consistently one
of the most valuable
currencies to use to get to destinations and Thailand / South East Asia is no different.
IAG's two biggest
airlines (Iberia and BA) both have their own separate loyalty programs but both use Avios as their
currency and both have very similar rewards charts so we've been expecting more
of the same from Aer Lingus....
Both loyalty
currencies cost around the same in the promotions but with MileagePlus miles you can avoid paying fuel surcharges when using them on United and a number
of other
airlines and, on top
of that, you can purchase long - haul premium cabin awards on United for fewer miles than you can on British Airways.
All
of these
currencies transfer over to multiple
airlines so, should one
airline devalue its program, I still have a good selection
of others to choose from — I'm not stuck with a devalued
currency.
Though all 3
of these
airlines use Avios as their points
currency, the Iberia Plus frequent flyer program is distinct.
Most travel hackers take advantage
of the loyalty programs
of foreign
airlines through flexible points
currencies, like transfers
of Chase Ultimate Rewards points to British Airways Executive Club Avios, American Express Membership Rewards points to Singapore KrisFlyer, or Citi ThankYou points to Air France KLM Flying Blue.
Citi ThankYou points transfer over to a good number
of other loyalty programs (including Singapore
Airlines) and they're a good, flexible
currency to collect.
Airberlin is a member
of the oneworld alliance so awards on the
airline can be booked using American
Airlines AAdvantage Miles as well as Avios and all the other oneworld
currencies.
