A
pellet with a basis
of primarily
alfalfa hay provides added protein and calcium for younger, growing rabbits and those that are pregnant and nursing.
A proper diet for a house rabbit should consist
of 80 % grass hay (Timothy, Orchard or Oat hay for adults,
alfalfa hay for rabbits 6 months and under), 10 % fresh greens and 10 % or less
of pellets.

of serious problems for our pet rabbits.
Many
pellets are designed for weight gain, not longevity, so you might switch to a low calorie
pellet that uses timothy instead
of alfalfa.
These little green
pellets are made up mostly
of alfalfa hay, and the chlorophyll in the hay is excellent at controlling odor.
Timothy hay should be the main diet
of all rabbits and guinea pigs, with
pellets and
alfalfa hay used as supplements.
Limiting the
alfalfa - based
pellets in the diet and avoiding or discontinuing mineral supplementation can reduce the amount
of calcium excreted in the urine.
For instance, when commercial food
