The only reason I can think of is if it were to cause a massive overpopulation of humans, which would only be important in the
case of an alien attack.
A second Battle: Los Angeles trailer has been released by Columbia Pictures and it begins with an explanation of these events, followed by a powerful teaser for the upcoming film which focuses on the worldwide

This animated film includes
depictions of alien attacks, soldiers being vaporized, weapon use, destroyed buildings and massive explosions.

The game is stunningly beautiful... well that is until one of the worst things that can happen in space

The story is very simple and keeps with the original Space Invaders
concept of aliens attacking Earth and humans defending it with a space ships, simple but effective.
