As our understanding of the profound influence of commensal microbes on the maturation of the immune system has grown, more recent iterations of this hypothesis have supported the idea that alterations in the composition of the intestinal microbiota induced by environmental factors (e.g., antibiotics, diet, vaccination, sanitation) play a central role in the regulation
of allergic sensitization (5 ⇓ — 7).

The findings build on another CHILD study finding, which showed that children who avoid cow's milk products, egg, and peanut during the first year of life are at increased risk
of allergic sensitization to these foods later on.
Infants would be examined by medical providers at regular intervals for the presence of atopic dermatitis (using standardized scoring methods) as well as food allergic symptoms and other allergic disease (confirmed by IgE testing), and not just the presence
of allergic sensitization.

of asthma and on reported food allergy.
Climate change, resulting in more frost - free days and warmer seasonal air temperatures, can contribute to shifts in flowering time and pollen initiation from allergenic plant species, and increased CO2 by itself can elevate production
of plant - based allergens.137, 15,16,17,18,19,138 Higher pollen concentrations and longer pollen seasons can increase
allergic sensitizations and asthma episodes, 20,21,155,22 and diminish productive work and school days.138, 22,23
