As recently as five or six years ago, these difficulties seemed intractable, as the rapid development
of alternative energy sources seemed the only way out of our dependence on foreign oil, and such development seemed nowhere in sight.

On the climate front, discussions
of ways to limit global warming
seem more focused on capturing stray emissions
of methane (more on that anon) than on pressing for ways to promote it as an
alternative to coal, at least as a bridge to even less - polluting
energy sources.
Obviously it has centuries
of «existing use» as the «status quo»
energy source, but — just as with any drug company — as more and more evidence
of the potentially harmful effects
of its product emerge, it would
seem that the responsibility
of the governing authorities is to impose the precautionary principle and insist that the producers
of the substance «prove» that it is harmless (in relation to
alternatives).
Nuclear, wind and hydro
seem to bet the
alternative energy sources of choice.
