Out of Alternatives, the first public initiative by CPNY will examine the ways in which small - scale organizations are perceived and understood by audiences, artists, and funders; identify the challenges of operating in today's climate; and revive discussions of obstacles and inequalities which have persisted since the
rise of the alternative space.

It expands the notion
of alternative space by investigating «sites» that are not physical locations, such as Ariadne, a social network of feminist media resources.
In a report into the coworking market released in January 2018, Elaine Rossall, Head of London Markets Research at Cushman & Wakefield, identified «growing pressure on the supply of suitable coworking space» as a key obstacle in the industry's growth — but identified the
use of alternative spaces as a solution.

GANGITANO: Yeah, the founding of Participant came directly out of the
closing of another alternative space, Thread Waxing Space, where I had worked as a curator from 1997 through 2001.

EC: Looking to Franklin Furnace, Franklin Furnace was one
