amphibian to have been officially declared extinct by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has been rediscovered in the north
of Israel after some 60 years and turns out to be a unique «living fossil,» without close relatives among other living frogs.
«The decline in Madagascan
amphibians is not just a concern for herpetologists and frog researchers,» says Dr Franco Andreone from the International Union for
Conservation of Nature (IUCN), who is one
of the study authors.
By mastering these skills, volunteers gain increased experience and control over asking and answering scientific questions which, in turn, augments science literacy, facilitates
conservation action and stewardship, and increases knowledge
of amphibians.
But many
of those won't be around much longer; one out
of every eight known bird species, one in four mammal species, and one in three
amphibian species are at risk for extinction, according to the World
Conservation Union (IUCN), which maintains the Red List, a catalog
of the world's species classified according to their risk
of extinction.
Out
of the seven new species, five are facing considerable anthropogenic threats and require immediate
conservation prioritization,» says Prof SD Biju, who led the new study and has also formally described over 80 new species
of amphibians from India.
This critically endangered frog can be used as a basis for declaring its native laterite habitats as «
Conservation Reserves» or «Biological Heritage Areas» under existing legislations in India, allowing us to further our knowledge and understanding
of amphibians,» said Mr Seshadri.
In 2004 the International Union for the
Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared a third
of the world's known
amphibian species threatened or extinct.
It's a pity, really — if whales were
amphibians, that much maligned and oft ignored group might benefit from some
of the huge amounts
of public sympathy (and money) available to cetacean
conservation.
While adherents
of sustainable use argue that it is the best way to begin
conservation «on the ground» and to improve the way trade in reptiles and
amphibians is regulated, they recognise that it will not succeed in isolation.
The researchers cited an estimate by the International Union for
Conservation of Nature that more than 41 percent
of all
amphibian species and 26 percent
of all mammals are at high risk
of extinction.
«It's a pretty big deal for the
conservation of this species and all
amphibians,» said McGinnity.
