CTE teachers can teach literacy quite effectively — it is normal in the CTE classroom for students to be presented with a
range of authentic texts, such as blueprints, technical manuals, computer programs, profit - loss statements, lab reports, and floor plans.
The open access archive contains
thousands of authentic texts in Indigenous languages of the Northern Territory, many with English translations and rich illustrations.
Instruction in close reading enables students to become attuned to the essential
elements of authentic texts: from key ideas and claims to specific details and evidence; from the effects of single words to those of larger textual structures; from the significance of individual texts to the interrelated meanings of entire corpora.
