The earlier you book, the higher the chance
of having
award seats available.
Most airlines will open their flights to new reservations about 11 months in advance, and if you're able to book your travel then, then you'll have one
of the best opportunities to find
available award seats on the flights you want.
If an airline is said to have «good
award seat availability» that means that each flight has a large number
of seats available to those looking to book with miles.
One
of the best perks
of certain United Airlines credit cards is access to more
available award seats on United Airlines.
But now, airlines have devalued their miles by raising the number
of miles needed for
award seats, and by reducing the number
of award seats available.
But with airlines increasing the number
of miles needed for many
awards, and reducing the number
of seats they make
available for the lowest mileage levels, these programs have lost some
of their value.
The reason it can be difficult to redeem miles is because airlines limit the number
of seats available at the lowest
award levels, and they make those determinations based on supply and demand.
These points are even more valuable when you consider that all Southwest
seats are
available for
award bookings regardless
of date or flight.
American Airlines surprised many today when it announced several customer - friendly changes to its frequent - flier program. The new «One - Way Flex
Awards» will allow customers to book one - way tickets for half the amount
of miles needed for a round - trip ticket, and will also let passengers book multi-city itineraries and combine
award seats with non-
award seats.Under the old paradigm, passengers could only book round - trips to and from the same city and were forced to fly in an
award seat of equal value for both legs
of the journey. This often made booking
award travel an exercise in futility — for example, an
award seat might be
available only on an outbound journey, but not the return trip. But now passengers will be able to fly to New York in an
award seat, and return in a premium - fare
seat if a return
award seat is not
available.
With 2
seats in first class from the U.S. to London
available several days each month, British Airways is one
of the easier first class
awards to find.
Reward models matter Sorensen says the amount
of award seats available often reflects a tension within airlines.
Award tickets may be booked as shortly as two hours prior to a flight when they are
available, and because American itself operates the flight, rather than a partner, that means that any
available seat can be ours for the AAnytime rate
of 35,000 miles.
Moreover, no amount
of points or miles can get you on a flight without
available award seats.
It allows you to get any
available seat on any flight, but you'll pay a premium
award rate tied to the current cash price
of the ticket.
Finding first class
award seats on Cathay Pacific is getting tougher and tougher as the airline keeps limiting the number
of available bookings made through partner airlines.
Scott McCartney, Travel Editor
of The Wall Street Journal, discusses how the airlines now make more money from their frequent flyer programs than they do from normal airline operations, and which airlines are the best and worst at making
award seats available to passengers.
Speaking
of award availability I seem to be seeing 5
seats available in Economy and 2 in Business for most flights.
If you don't see space when you search, there are often 1 or 2
award seats available within 2 weeks
of departure.
Of course, there's competition to snag these inexpensive off - peak
awards, but it's certainly possible if you plan your trip in advance and book
seats as soon as off - peak
awards become
available.
Increased
award availability When we announced the SkyMiles 2015 program we committed to making more
award seats available at the lowest prices and since the start
of 2015 we have expanded
award availability at the lowest prices by greater than 50 %.
Limit the number
of seats available for
award travel or otherwise restrict the continued availability
of travel
