I did some «budget - friendly» renovating
of my kitchen 2 yrs ago, stripping old
wallpaper, putting in the subway tile backsplash, adding bright white
beadboard halfway up walls and on the existing white cabinet ends, painting the rest
of the walls soft white (sometimes looks very very pale yellow).
I also chose to run
beadboard wallpaper on the «kick...»
of my island and add my faux cabinet feet to the front (as you can see in the finished photograph).

First, here's your supply list: primer * for walls;
beadboard wallpaper, chair rail trim, sponge, measuring tape, bucket, level, scissors, roller, brad nails and hammer (or brad nailer), paint color
of choice, miter saw for chair rail trim.
I was thinking using
beadboard wallpaper on the back / side
of my kitchen peninsula, but I'm not so sure now that you mention potential dings — it's a high traffic area!
