of the universe as a psychic - spiritual as well as a physical - material process, his perception
of the human as the consciousness

of the focus
of Western religious concern
from redemption to creation.
As veteran pastor Eugene Peterson writes, «Wendell
Berry is a writer
from whom I have learned much
of my pastoral theology.
In fact,
from the tone
of the rest
of his writings, such as when he expresses his appreciation for the American farmer and essayist Wendell
Berry, one can only conclude that he advocates a far more pastoral ecclessiology than most would prefer today.
Berry agrees, but one wonders if he would ever admit that his own partisan thumos in defense
of the land has not itself become a commodity to be sold on a market for urban types who feel alienated
from their own small town and rural backgrounds.
I wonder
of these Washingtonians — deracinated
from any productive skill or
from any true local community — who applaud Wendell
Berry in his near Gandhian, or at least Thoreauvian remarks
of limits, place and simplicity.
From the liberal standpoint, modernity is not the desert
of meaningless lifestyle - chasing Hauerwas implies it is (he appears to endorse Wendell
Berry's judgment that the «dominant story
of our age, undoubtedly, is that
of adultery and divorce»).
Next comes some searching criticisms
of our displaced meritocracy
from more traditionally American countercultural views, those inspired by Wendell
Berry.
I like to think that everything
from the gathering
of the
berries to the raising
of my tinies to the feeding
of the hungry to the advocating for my local community's needs is a sacrament, and a foretaste, that we embody the Gospel by our roots, too, by our transforming love, by our unhurried community development, by our friendships, by our casseroles, and our wanderings.

of a Tolkien or a Lewis.

It is like eating the ice cream version
of a
berry cake or muffin only the recipe is made purely
from fruit.
We move methodically
from plant to plant, picking all
of the ripe
berries before moving onto the next.
Resist the urge to switch to a different
berry; raspberries pack more fiber and liquid than most other fruits, boosting feelings
of satiety — and keeping you away
from the office snacks.
