This year marked 5 years
of being in business as a
photographer and 4 years
of documenting
birth stories.
As a
birth photographer I have the privilege to witness these transformations, the beauty
of life and mothers born.
Some
births are short from the time
of arrival
of the
photographer to
birth and the first couple
of post partum hours between parents and baby.
I spent a lot
of time looking at poses, and the last thing you want to do after giving is
birth is to stress about finding the perfect
photographer and getting good pictures.
Although it is important for me to work with highly professional and skilled women (who are also mothers) who are put to the strictest standards
of high quality
birth artwork in the event I have an imminent emergency during a client's labor, my goal is to always be dependable and attend every one
of my
birth client's
births myself, and I am glad to say in four years
of birth photography (out
of my ten years
of working as a
photographer), I have attended each
of my client's
births myself.
You also want to be sure your
photographer defines the parameters
of what constitutes an emergency worth missing your
birth for.
It is important to hire a
birth photographer who has experience around birthing mothers and knowledge
of the
birth process.
For those
of you who haven't noticed, I am a proud member
of the Canadian
Birth Photographers.
If your
photographer is inexperienced with working along side
of medical professionals ranging from nurses to OBGYNS, NICU nurses, neonatologists and anesthesiologists, it can affect how much
of your
birth story they are allowed to photograph
I kept referring back to my first
birth, «They were not this intense until later on...» I make sure we contact my other doula friend and
of course, the
photographer!
THIS is why my clients won't hire an
photographer without years
of birth artwork experience, years down the road with subsequent
births.
The more
births your
photographer attends, the more experience they gain working with lighting, unexpected last minute changes, lack
of room.
Depending on the type
of birth you plan to have (hospital hypnobirth, induction, cesarean, home
birth,
birth center) the
photographer should be able to show you samples
of previous similar
births they have captured.
Many
photographers, even great
photographers, are easily overwhelmed by the newness
of seeing
birth.
