Often characterized by gaping black holes, undulating form, and sinuous organic lines, they have been consistently experimental in their materials and technique, beginning with the artist's early use of a welding torch to deposit velvety
layers of black soot on paper, muslin, and canvas.
To investigate the possible
role of black soot in causing glacial melt, a team of scientists from Chinese research institutes extracted ice cores from five locations on the Tibetan Plateau (Figure 1).
But another
boost of black soot comes from record fires in the Canadian Boreal forest and Arctic this year.
Mauri indicates that fresh snowfall on the glaciers tends to blunt the
impacts of black soot on the glaciers (due to their altitude, they retain much of the fresh snow year - round in their accumulation zones).
«We can't expect this study to clarify the
effect of black soot on the melting of Tibetan snow and glaciers entirely,» said Cao.
Reduction of black soot via cleaner energies would have other benefits for human health and agricultural productivity.
Besides emissions of greenhouse gases, humans are constantly changing their environment which does have an impact (e.g. turning a corn field into an asphalt parking lot or massive deforestation in the world's major tropical rainforests or laying down a
carpet of black soot on ice sheets).
