I hope in the future
opponents of breed bans can point to these dogs as proof that it isn't the breed: it's the owner.
Many animal shelters are flooded with dogs who,
because of breed bans, can't be adopted to the people in their communities.
Passengers can still bring small pets, including many
of the breeds banned in cargo, into the cabin if the animal's carrier fits under the seat without obstructing passengers from exiting.
Complicating the
issue of breed bans and restrictions is the fact that often pet dogs are mixed breeds.
We also continue to struggle with the large
number of breed bans in our region that are causing many pit bulls to become unnecessarily homeless and also eliminate many potential homes for the ones that are in the shelter.
It should also be noted that Skeldon was one of only a couple of «experts» that were brought in by Michael Bryant to testify in Ontario on
behalf of their breed ban in 2003.
In the
case of a breed ban, the police and animal control lose the public's trust by seizing and killing innocent pets simply because of their appearance.
In the United Kingdom and Spain, studies of dog - bite rates before and after
implementation of breed bans concluded that the breed - discriminatory laws had no effect whatsoever on reducing dog bites.
But if lawmakers are looking for
proof of a breed ban's effectiveness, they need only look to the neighboring province of Ontario, where pit bulls have been banned for more than a decade - and dog bites have actually gone up in that span.
