of calming signals is offered by Dr. Karen London, a certified applied animal behaviorist and certified professional dog trainer1, in an essay titled «Should we call these canine behaviors calming signals?»
Turid Rugaas is a Norwegian trainer and dog behaviorist whom I call the «queen
of calming signals.»
What are the main purposes
of calming signals?

calming signals» to indicate their discomfort before they escalate to violence which cats rarely seem to (though admittedly, I've formally studied canine behaviour but not feline).

I often also employ my dogs in cases
of inter-dog aggression or fear aggression because my dogs are good in delivering
calming signals.

I had learned about yawning and sneezing as a
calming signal but not some
of these others.

of situations where the dog feels uneasy, wants to demonstrate he is not a threat, or is trying to become friends with another dog.

Sadly, these conditioning process inadvertently teaches these dogs not to use
calming signals, and less savvy handlers and evaluators mistake the lack
of signaling for «being comfortable with.»
There is a set
of behaviors - called
calming signals - dogs display when they are stressed.

signals and signs
of friendliness, and which
of their actions can
calm a tense, uncertain situation.
