The Charity MRSA Action UK had the privilege to be invited to the Royal Hampshire County Hospital where they were unveiling a new procedure for the insertion
of cannula and IV lines.
From the Charity's perspective we felt that the hospital had taken a bold step by reviewing the policy
of cannula insertion, and making a step - change that is now a prescribed procedure requiring a doctor's authorisation to insert them.
This new procedure by the Royal Hampshire for the insertion
of cannula or IV lines on the basis of doing it only when absolutely necessary, we believe has contributed significantly to the hospital having no MRSA bacteraemias for the last six months.
A camera is then introduced through one
of those cannulas to view the stomach; the other cannula is used to insert a grasping instrument.
