The future for small - and mid-sized law firms is far from bleak, but we do have to face up to the reality
of changes in our profession and the market that we serve.
In the pages of original research generated by the Canadian Bar Association's Legal Futures Initiative, technology and client expectations stand out as two of the most important drivers
of change in the profession.

To some extent, this attitude
of denial has come about because
of changes in our society
in this century: the marked decrease
in the number
of deaths at an early age; the development
of specialized
professions for the care
of the dying and the dead; the emergence
of geographical mobility, with the consequence that most
of us live at some distance from aging and dying relatives, including parents; the growth
of separate communities for the aging, not only nursing homes but retirement communities.
Infusing both
of these meanings is a background anxiety that the education
of Protestant ministers has not kept up with radical developments
in knowledge nor with
changes in educational standards and procedures
in the twentieth century, and thus that the ministry may not «hold its own with the leaders
of the other
professions» (Brown, 4) and might slip from its traditional parity
in esteem with law and medicine.
