Another option would be to omit the liquid smoke and use smoked paprika, or a
bit of chipotle powder, if either of those is available to you.
I think I'll just substitute a
pinch of chipotle powder (to get the smokiness) mixed with one and a half teaspoons of Hungarian paprika or sweet paprika.

I don't think I've ever cooked with New Mexico chile powder — although we certainly have our
share of chipotle powder and chile California kicking around the spice cabinet.
