DOE presents a good distillation
of the Administration's
general approach to
science and technology: a particular skepticism
of federal technology programs and hostility to
climate research; a
general interest
in scaling back even fundamental
science; and a desire to increase investment
in defense - related activities.
But he faces a high bar: Mann has played a key role
in climate science for decades, and the law generally requires a much higher burden
of proof from public figures, said CEI
general counsel Sam Kazman.
Schaal, dean
of the faculty
of arts and
sciences at Washington University
in St. Louis, called for more effective communication and public engagement by scientists
in explaining their work, both to policy makers and to the
general public, across a range
of topics —
climate change, evolution, stem cells, and use
of genetically modified organisms (GMOs)
in agriculture.

The relationship between warmer air and the greater amounts
of moisture it contains is one
of the most well - accepted tenets
of climate science, and underpins one
of the more solid projections, that warming will lead to more heavy downpours
in general across the globe.
The team did not only look at specific events however but also published a number
of conceptual papers on attribution as a
science, CPDN as a unique capability and
climate modelling
in general (10 - 15).
There is no evidence whatsoever that «politics»
in any way, shape or form has influenced actual
climate science, or its overwhelming conclusions regarding both the reality
of anthropogenic global warming and the danger that it poses to humanity and to life on earth
in general.
I only possess a layman knowledge
of climate science, I am
in no position to debate the
science and neither is 99 % (I'm guessing)
of the
general population, we simply have to take your word for it.
@ 58 Hank, first the
general public (nor I) needs to educate themselves about the intricacies
of «statistics»
in the links to accept the
climate science and act accordingly.
«Our investigation found that during the fall
of 2004 through early 2006, the NASA Headquarters Office
of Public Affairs managed the topic
of climate change
in a manner that reduced, marginalized, or mischaracterized
climate change
science made available to the
general public through those particular media over which the Office
of Public Affairs had control (i.e., news releases and media access).

of room
in the curriculum for the fundamentals
of climate science, as well as for the scientific method
in general.
It is the decoupling
of dispassionate from skepticism that makes public discussions about
climate science and environmental issues
in general so uninformative.
I conjecture that three changes
in the way
in which the
climate problem is presented by the experts to the
general public would make the conversation go better: acknowledge that
climate constraints are unwelcome (thereby establishing empathy with
general audiences, as a doctor does when conveying bad news), present the
science as unfinished (thereby taking away the surprise factor that accompanies every new wrinkle — cf. the cosmic ray stories
of a couple
of weeks ago), and admit that no solution is wonderful (something hard for much
of our community, which loves some strategy and hates at least one
of the others).
IMO this issue is representative
of climate change
science in general, very interesting but very complicated.
Clearly the burden
of the work has not proven excessive, so I hope one can look forward to a lot more
of the same education
in science the
general reader receives from the scholars who contribute to Real
Climate.
I know that modelling always plays an important role
in science and global
climate change, such a vast phenomenon needs all the relevant research that is available, for the blind men (people
in general) to understand the elephant:) The models are a necessary component, and interestingly some
of these assumptions are based upon physics and chemsitry just the same, otherwise the models would be really far off.
Alistair I suspect that part
of the answer is that weathermen, as a
general rule, have a pretty limited background
in science (at least as evidenced by what comes out
of the mouths
of those on CNN and the various news stations around DC) and expecting them to be able to explain what is causing
climate change would be sort
of like expecting an EMT to explain brain surgery.
In general, physics (upon which
climate science is very largely based) has done as good, or better,
of a job at tying underlying physical drivers to observed phenomena, as has any other branch
of science, right up there with chemists and molecular biologists.
The other point is that so far, it seems to me that the progression
of assessment reports and
climate science studies
in general seems to keep indicating «it's worse than we thought.»
First, the campaign
in the 1920s against Einstein's
general theory
of relativity provides an uncannily complete template for the conservative attack on
climate science eight decades later.
There are widespread demands within the
climate science / environmental community to make questioning the dominant status
of ACO2
in «controlling the thermostat
of the Earth» a criminal offense under the
general umbrella
of «Crimes Against Humanity».
How ARM came to be: After 25 years
in action, ARM is still
in the business
of bettering the performance
of the
climate science's
general circulation models.
Harris cites the work
of PhD - level
climate scientists and atmospheric physicists who've studied global warming for decades, and none
of these skeptics deny
climate science in any
general sense
of the word — that's another unsupportable talking point from believers
of catastrophic man - caused global warming.
An investigative report by the NASA Inspector
General released June 2 validates charges that White House political appointees

He quotes the IPCC
in stating, «Observations to date provide no conclusive and
general proof as to how
climate change affects flood behaviour» and continues, «Given the strength
of the
science on this subject, the USGCRP must have gone to some effort to mischaracterize it by 180 degrees.»
Maybe a few straight - shooting individuals, who are recognized as top
climate scientists, such as our host here, can help regain the
general reputation
of climate science through open communication
in venues such as this site, essentially making the IPCC irrelevant
in the long run.
In general, I would support the ideal situation of complete transparency in science, though I also recognize that it is not often practical in the real world, and I've had headaches before getting data in a user - friendly format --- climate related or otherwise (of course, I would never support the null hypothesis of manipulation when such data / code is unavailable or not in a friendly format

The trust
in that case would be more along the lines
of the less informed public, and that includes many
of those persons responsible for policy, «trusting» the advocacy
of climate scientists,
in a
general way, being backed, more or less, with hard
science evidence.
Amid the increasing calls for CO2 reductions by many
climate change scientists and persistent attacks
of their
science by «deniers,» what may have been lost to the
general public
in recent years is that many scientists have dissented from what they see to be inaccurate or premature conclusions
of some IPCC scientists and a closing
of gates on scientific inquiry.
«I was invited about a year or so ago to New York to speak to the staff
of the New York Attorney
General's office mostly about the work we did in Merchants of Doubt... And may Karl, Peterson and NASA's Schmidt et al be exposed and punished for rendering the earths temperature history useless, compromising genuine scientific discovery and for sullying the reputation
of climate science and perhaps all
science fields
in general.
But neither will I accept the unfounded exploitation
of their content to attack the scientific integrity
of their authors, the integrity
of climate scientists
in general, or the overall conclusions
of climate science.
As for Judith Curry and her students, I would only have one
general request for my own edification and that would be to tell us if they have read the Wegman report, what is their overall evaluation
of it on reading it and how do they see it being applied to any
of the recognized weaknesses
in climate science today.
As I said
in my reply to Wegman, ordinarily I would agree with him that
science shouldn't be conducted through blogs, but
in the case
of climate science an opinion about global warming
in general, or the validity
of multiproxy reconstructions or
climate models
in particular seems to constitute for some a political viewpoint that must be either trumpeted from the rooftops or suppressed by any means possible regardless
of its scientific merit.
And
in general there a lot conning going on related to «
climate science» - but vast majority
of it seems to be related to self - deception and groupthink.
At the EGU
General Assembly a few weeks ago there were no less than three papers from groups
in Copenhagen and Bern assessing critically the merits
of methods used to reconstruct historical
climate variable from proxies; Bürger's papers
in 2005; Moberg's paper
in Nature
in 2005; various papers on borehole temperature; The National Academy
of Science Report from 2006 — al
of which have helped to clarify that the hockey - stick methodologies lead indeed to questionable historical reconstructions.
