Once I was happy with the layers of paint, I took a piece
of coarse sandpaper and went across the paint at random places to give it a distressed look.

First scratch up the surface
of your can with
coarse sandpaper, then spray the can with Hydrogen Peroxide and sprinkle salt over the can.

This required a fairly
coarse grain
of sandpaper.
The artist used whitewashed canvas,

The table top AFTER — Once I let the Chalk Paint dry, it was waxed with Clear Wax and then sanded using the method above
of coarser to finer, finishing with an auto body
sandpaper (600 grit) for a smooth finish.
It took multiple heavy rounds
of sanding with

sandpaper to get the finish off.
