The significance
of the post-exilic period, however, resides less in external
events than in the process by
which the life
of the Jewish
community was built up internally.

of the indisputable offices
of theology is to open the mind
of the present

which the primitive Church apprehended the

which God acted to make himself known, as those

which are constitutive
of the
community of the people

If one will examine the occurrences
of e n C r i s t y in the New Testament, one will find that they divide rather evenly as between those
which are used in allusions to God's action (when the meaning «
event» would be paramount) and those
which are found in references to the situation
of the believer (when the conception
of community, the body
of Christ, is dominant).
The clue to the interpretation
of whatever intimations
of the divine are given us in our common life is provided by the first century
event to
which we find ourselves inevitably looking back and by the historical
community through
which the concrete meaning
of that
event has been conveyed to us and in
which, therefore, the
event itself is in a sense perpetuated.
It is the
community of loyalty, devoted memory, and faith,
which answer to the life, death, and resurrection
of Christ; and therefore it is the

of Christ as a revelatory

What the Christian message asserts is that the
events associated with Jesus precipitated a situation in
which a decisive blow was dealt to the
community - destroying powers (symbolized in the form
of devils or dark spirits) and in
which a hitherto unavailable key was provided for opening up the treasure - house
of community - creating powers.
Mission points to the
event of communion
which God offers to the world as the Body
of Christ, the Church, that is a
community in history
which reflects the life
of God as communion.47
The various elements can be identified in different ways; but I should say that this central
event must be thought
of as including, whatever words may be used in designating them, the personality, life and teaching
of Jesus, the response
of loyalty he awakened, his death, his resurrection, the coming
of the Spirit, the faith with
which the Spirit was received, the creation
of the
community.
Imagination is the process by
which we make a language out
of the shapes
of events — the concrete elements
of our own experience and the experience
of our
communities.
Well actually, this guy, if you really knew your history, there were HUGE fights after the death
of Jesus, (who, curiously enough NEVER called himself «the Christ»), between the Jerusalem
community, (
which had many EYE WITNESSES in it), and Paul, (who NEVER met, nor heard Jesus say anything), about what was the meaning
of those
events.
These
events found an epoch because they have the twofold characteristic
of both founding a
community and
of delivering it from a great danger,
which, moreover, may take diverse forms.
Furthermore, the Christian
community exists in the contemporary world in
which Christian people have their own specific experience and grasp
of what this tradition, grounded in the apostolic witness to the originating
event, can mean to them.
It is important to see that no individual or
community comes to the moment in
which the
event and meaning are fused in witness without some existing symbolic tradition with
which to express the meaning
of this fusion.
It is also an
event when the personal, individual consciousness
of the preacher is enfleshed, authorized, and legitimated in the
community of which he or she is a part.
Durkheim also was important to me in clarifying the point that ideologies are born in
community and maintained there through regularly rehearsing those
events that provide the symbolic paradigms through
which members
of the
community understand themselves and their collective purpose.
