To say a model that has a dozen arbitrary values tossed into it for the sake
of curve fitting is «physics based» is, to put it mildly, using the term loosely.
(and no amount
of curve fitting, with keeling curve superimposed on best, is going to change that fact of the matter)...
I believe the same source told me that a metric buttload could be substituted by fitting it to the metric crap - tonne curve, but you either have to hard code in a correction factor (standard practice is to do so without comment), or you have to truncate the metric buttload plot at the end year
of the curve fitting period to avoid the divergence problem.

The act
of curve fitting can be used to extract parameters, and doesn't have to be statistical.
Otherwise, the previous discussion
of curve fitting applies.
Or you can try to find the best fit by manually adjusting fit parameters; Sample Learning Goals • Describe how correlation coefficient and chi squared can be used to indicate how well a curve describes the data relationship • Apply understanding
of Curve Fitting to designing experiments
However when the use
of the curve fit is intended for future projections, and this fit is then used to support an argument for current and future acceleration, then not presenting the best measurement we have which does not support an argument for acceleration is misleading in my opinion.

Individual growth
curve models were developed for multilevel analysis and specifically designed for exploring longitudinal data on individual changes over time.23 Using this approach, we applied the MIXED procedure in SAS (SAS Institute) to account for the random effects
of repeated measurements.24 To specify the correct model for our individual growth
curves, we compared a series
of MIXED models by evaluating the difference in deviance between nested models.23 Both fixed quadratic and cubic MIXED models
fit our data well, but we selected the fixed quadratic MIXED model because the addition
of a cubic time term was not statistically significant based on a log - likelihood ratio test.
