Before the drastic pruning back
of devotional life in the Church, the name of Teresa Higginson was commonplace in England, especially in the North - West.
Yet thirty years ago a new broom swept away much
of this devotional life.
It belongs in a discussion
of the devotional life and the methodology of Christian nurture.
Religion is above all devotion, and the intensity and fervor
of the devotional life of India's saints must put many lukewarm Western Christians to shame.

of persons who share an interest in deepening their
devotional life.
This is to say nothing
of countless prayers whispered quietly by bedsides, as Christians all over the world pray the psalms in their
devotional lives.

devotional life these moods are intertwined, and we discuss them separately only for the sake
of further analysis
of the place
of gratitude in prayer.
This separated religion is man's greatest danger whether it manifests itself in the form
of a cult in which sacramental forms are independent
of everyday
life or
of a soul detached from

At its best, this new concern with the spiritual
life reflects a laudable desire to make Christian faith a matter

devotional objects — is to provide what have proved in actual experience to be the most favorable conditions for real prayer.
For it is necessary that the faith
of the Church, as this has been articulated during the two thousand years
of Christian history in the form
of theological statements, should be made known to the people; it is equally necessary that the developed principles
of Christian
life, in respect to
devotional practice and in terms
of daily conduct, should be taught.
In a book whose topic is the preaching
of the gospel, it would not be appropriate or necessary to speak at length about the
devotional life of the preacher
of that gospel.

In a way Westerners
living thousands
of miles away could never know, he learned that Islam was more than a creed or a set
